    Turbo on fire [O_O]

A friend of mine has a 2002 1.8T with about 120K miles on it. He was driving normally and the thing started to misfire and smoke coming out of the engine bay. He opened the hood and the turbo was glowing red and fire was torching out of ..(somewhere). Any ideas what this can be?

Do you think he fried his turbo? Is the oil feeder tube accessible for replacement? I want to help him out so he won't get raped by the dealership.

    Thanks for your answer!

Well that tube usually gets blocked by something in the oil. IE sludge. My bet is that he'll need more than just a turbo. But yes generally when the turbo catches fire thats not a good thing. Sh!t gets warped inside and maybe even stops working all together.

Thanks for your info Quat. I think he mentioned something about the dealer finding his oil dry... Where would you buy a used turbo assy?

    thanks again
