caliper colour? anyone painted theirs?

i need to have my calipers ground back 5mm or so to get my new wheels on, so i'll need to paint them afterwards.

who has painted calipers? i quite like red, but i'm thinking it may look a bit rice as the calipers are massive. so... maybe silver for a stock look.

anyone got any pics?

yeah I've got 5mm spacers but due to the size of the calipers & the shape of the spokes, they still don't fit. The offset of the wheels means that anything more than a 5mm spacer will stick out too much for my liking, so hence grinding the calipers.

How is red at all rice? I'm pretty sure Porsche, Ferrari, etc all have huge red calipers.

yeah i suppose i don't really mean 'rice' - just thinking red = brembo normally & i don't have brembo so maybe they shouldn't be red...?!

i think red calipers look pretty cool so i may just do that anyway... i can always repaint them!

I am painting mine gloss black, as I did all of my previous cars. Black looks nice no matter what, and shows dirt the least.

My only problem with red, is the carriers are HUGE so it looks a little awkward, and well... any oem calipler assembly looks a little awkward painted red IMO. Big brake kits are noticeable and you want to show them off, so that's a different story.

But as always... your car is your creation with the modifications you like; we are just here to share our opinions

Yup, a valid point... though the OEM brakes are massive & my discs are vented & cross-drilled as standard, so its not like i'll be painting them to look beyond their capabilities!? lol

if it looks shit, i'll just repaint them. its only a matter of £10 or so.

Hmm silver doesn't look bad at all.

BBK's always have a nice smooth painted finish, and oem calipers are rough and dirty looking so even if you get the perfect coat of gloss red on them, they're still all dimpled and obviously just a piece of stock cast metal.




These BBK's ^ have a nice smooth finish, and our stock brakes... just don't.

im also going to paint my calipers, as i have done on pretty much all of my previous cars/trucks. This time i want to spray them tho. Brushing is a pain, and doesnt come out as nice. So... Has anyone removed the calipers to paint them? DIY maybe?

It's quite to pain to remove the caliper and carrier, bleed the whole system, clamp off the hoses, paint everything, reattach the hoses to the calipers, reinstall, refill with brake fluid, then properly bleed everything.

It's much easier to just mask off and paint.

Another reason why black is great, is because any overspray anywhere in the wheel well can not be seen haha

I used high temp silver paint on the calipers of an E55 I used to have. The newspaper, masking tape method works fine just use lots of newspaper to catch the overspray. I put 3-4 coats on mine.

yeah i've done previous cars & masking is defo the easiest method... plus i used brush-on paint which i've ordered again. it sets fairly smooth with no brush marks & it's alot more controllable than spray paint in a breeze... imagine having little red speckles up the side of ur car?!

I painted my calipers red but I did a really shabby job cause I was in such a hurry. If you take your time with a few coats, it would look great.

sorry guys, but are we on a civic forum? red brakes, really? that looks so tacky! if you are on stock brakes and you INSIST on painting them, go with black or a silver/gray (like stock) only.

Are you serious? what about all the Big brake kits/porsche upgrades that people do and have red brakes? I saw go with whatever color you want cuz all you need to do is powerwash it off and paint a different color if you don't like what you did!

"Powerwash it off" would mean that the paint prep and/or paint quality is questionable...
If you must paint, IMHO I would go with the >>> G2 Brake Caliper Paint Kit
I works great and drys as tough as plastic.
BTW, I went w/classic black on my setup :)

Yeah that's basically what I've ordered. It's brush on & self-levels when it dries.

Use the spray from Dupli-color its alot easier and better looking than the brush on.

that is exactly my point. BIG BRAKE KITS. why on earth would you advertise that you are running stock bright red brakes?? "hey everyone, i couldn't afford real red brakes, but i wanted to let you know how tacky i can be with these bright red stock versions. See how small they are???"

I don't really see the problem with painting your calipers... If it's going with a color scheme that you are trying to obtain for your car then what is the problem? I mean I'm going for a red/black theme, why would I want a red car, black trim, black wheels, and SILVER calipers? Those bitches are getting painted red when I get my next paycheck.

Regardless of color, powder coat is the way to go.
Sorry for such a large pic, this was my ECS BBK kit I took off my GTI that I had powder coat and clear coat done for 60 bucks, if you ask me its well worth letting the car sit for the 24 hrs taken that you don't mind pulling them.
