    Unhappy Rust :( Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So what seemed like a small nick with a little rust forming...

Is apparently a much bigger problem

What should I do about it? I was thinking of just getting some coarse sandpaper for the big spots, sanding it down and bondoing it back if it needs it. Then either going the cheap route and rattle canning it (obviously taping everything off) or getting some OEM replacement LY9B (I think thats the code) paint and paying out the ass to have the door jambs kinda match better.

Is there another way I should go about this?

    Re: Rust :( Help

Dang sorry to see that. But don't take the easy way out and do a quick job. I tried that with my Nissan Sentra which had rust in about the same spot. But what I didn't know and came to find out is that I had to take the whole 2 front finders off, because rust was hiding behind them and my quick fixes didn't last long. (but my issue might of been worse than yours). Good luck.

    Re: Rust :( Help

ouch that sucks man. I'm startin to think as the B5s get older, I wonder what will be the common rust spots. I have a 1990 BMW E30 rust bucket, and all the problematic rust areas are the same across the board w/ all the cars of that generation. I wonder if not cleaning the sunroof drains will cause potential problems down the line for us.....since it seems that almost all of us have stains in the C-pillars.

    Re: Rust :( Help

Unfortantley once you have rust it is pretty much imposible to get rid of it withouth cutting out the rusted areas and replacing it with metal agian. My dad has a autobody shop and we have done a lot of restoration projects as well as newer cars with rust problems. You can sand off the rust and body fill over it then primer and paint it, but it will comeback somewhere down the line. It could last a year, it could last 3 months.

    Re: Rust :( Help

if you grind out all the rust, it should be fine as long as the fresh sheet metal is properly treated. Fix it quickly before it eats THROUGh the sheet metal. Rust moves faster then you think

    Re: Rust :( Help

My bet is that it is a perforation warranty.

    Re: Rust :( Help

Alright I'm gonna probably take care of it in a week or two, pick up some of that POR-15 stuff and go at the car with some paper/dremel grinder. Thanks for the help guys.

EDIT: What do you think a professional body shops quote for this would be? I might stop by a local shop and see what they say...

    Re: Rust :( Help

I would suggest sandblasting in the door jamb area. You will never get all the rust with a grinder. I also used to work work in a body shop doing rust repair. It's tough to get rid of ... you grind it or sand it down and it's like cancer sometimes it comes back. It's all about the prep. If you clean it up good enough and treat the metal it probably won't come back. Use good quality products to repair it and it probably won't come back. Better yet take it to a shop that is good at rust repair.

Onemoremile is probably right that Audi's rust warranty is against perforation. So in other words it needs to be rusted thru.

    Re: Rust :( Help

you can use a soad media that wont eat trim if you dont want to take it off the car. its alot slower than sand tho. wire wheel on a grinder works pretty well but becarful not to eat through it....

    Re: Rust :( Help

Took it down to a local bodyshop today to have them check it out. Right away the guy was able to tell me that that quarter panel was replaced at one time. He pointed out the sanding marks, overspray, slight panel disorientation at what appears to have been the weld seam, and some orange peel as evidence of it.

Said repair would start at around $400 and depending on what had to be done to make sure the rust didn't come back it would go up...

I'm going to have a friend look at it and see if he can do something homebrew style, but I think I'm gonna have to eat this one . There goes the h-bars.

    Re: Rust :( Help

I would that you have a pro do it. If you "homebrew" it you will more than likely regret it.
