I was thinking more like servo and linear actuator with a full round of positioning sensors.

Hah, never even seen the place (MIT). To be honest, my formal education is rather lacking, but I've always been a fan of tinkering with things.

I wouldn't bother automating the clutch, I like to sweet talk the clutch too much to give that up. But quick sequential style shifting is something that interests me. I loved it on my motorcycles. As for BMW, I've got one (E24 6 series for sale), and I've driven several others, and I just don't "feel right" in them.
I'm sure they spent considerable time and effort designing the A4, but how friggen cool would it be to have a paddle shift manual with full clutch finesse?
And for what it's worth, I'm just in pondering stages with this at the moment. I was watching Top Gear earlier, and they test drove the Ascari A10, which has a sequential gearbox, and I got to thinking that I really liked that on my bikes, then thoughts turned to the Audi, etc... I doubt I'll actually make it, but if I did, there would be a lot more room in the console to mount gadgets. (maybe a cupholder that actually works)
