Arrow how do my tires look?

ok well after some drives out my favorite local twisty roads lately my tires aint looking to hot. My front tires are in need of replacement, the outsides on each are balding quick but the rest of the tire looks fine, allignment issue im guessing.

The rear tires are what im wondering about, the tires look fine and everything, but again with the outer walls of each, they are cracking. Im guessing since the tires are from like 2004(if not mistaken from reciets, around 25-30k miles these tires have seen) and not to long ago my CA's went and that prob threw the camber off a bit. anyways. I wanted to just replace the fronts with some used tires to hold up threw summer before i get 18's and new tires, i would be wasting my money to buy a whole new set of tires for the rims i dont wanna see on my car for long... my question is, will these tires last another 5-10k miles, if driven on properly...

    rear

    rear 2

annnnd the nasty fronts... notice the wire trying to show through

the pass side is the worst.. prob from hitting hard left turns lol

    Keep 'em

I wouldn't run AutoX with them, but daily driving and no 1000 mile trips, you'll be fine. Definitely get some before winter though.

if i was you i would get some new tires. they are showing weather cracks in them. the fronts look ok but they are coming to the end of life.
the rears are gone. see how the outer sholder is all gone on one side? your almost in secondary rubber. the pass side is all bad. your showing cords.

I have run tires much worse than that. Ran the tires on a expedition until the steel belts were fraying and coming apart! My rears right now are pretty bad, but Im probably going to keep them through summer and get new rims as well.

Re: how do my tires look?

on quattro cars you need to replace all four tiers at once unless the others have certain amount of tread left. i forget what it is. if you dont replace all four you can fuck up your trany and the diff. from the looks of the pics, i would replace all fore soon as possible. your showing cords and secondary rubber. this can easily cause a blow out, your more apt to pick up nails and screw on the road, you dont have the braking ability as you do with such tiers that are low, can cause a spin out easy, and traction well you will have a hard time getting traction when needed.
go to your local americas tires and have them look at the fronts and see how much rubber is left. you just might be able to get away with replacing the rears. i dont know. if i was to see you car in person i would be able to tell you. kinda hard to say cuz i cant measure the tread.

^if he does pick up 2 new tires. then he just has to make sure that the rolling distance between the new tires and the older tires being kept on the car are within 3% difference of each other.. you can get away with 5% if needed

you know what pics are of the rears right? You think the cracks on the outside edge is worse then wire almost starting to show through on 1 and a really bald edge on the other(fronts)

so with awd you can only run tires that are the same kind/size and have the same amount of tread on each tire?

Re: how do my tires look?

you dont have to run the same size unless your staggered figment. since you dont have a staggered figment keep the same size. you can run different tire brans if you want, but the different tires might make you car perform differently. yea you want to have the same amount of tread on all fore of your tires cuz you can fuck shit up on the car.

fuck shit up on the car? can you be more specific? are you talking about the differentials? what?

you sound as if you don't have any clue what your talking about. just repeating what someone else said.. don't mean to sound like a jerk btw.

Re: how do my tires look?

it will create stress on the AWD system, and will overheat and wear out drive train components.

Re: how do my tires look?

ok so im confused, can i not put newer or used tires on the front and leave my rears, becuase the tread will be different messing up the tranny or differentials or w.e?

As long as the tread pattern is similar and same rolling distance and size tire then shouldnt i be fine, Esp if i find a set of used tires that almost have the same tread life as my rear tires...

Re: how do my tires look?

the problem is that tire sizes range depending on the brand. My yokohamas are about 1/2 wider then my falkens but they are both 225/40/18. just replace all 4. They are 16s so it should be cheap anyways.

Re: how do my tires look?

My first piece of advice is to never take advice from someone who cannot spell correctly; especially words such as "FOUR" and "ONCE".

Your rear tires will always wear quicker than the fronts because of the 60/40 split in power. That being said, you CAN run newer tires on the front. Just make sure they are the same size as the rears. A couple of 32nds will not create problems up the drive line. However, make sure that your tires have the same wear on the same axle. A differential takes the power lost (from unequal tires, turning, etc) on one side and applies it to the other side.

The reason your tires have so much weather cracking is probably because you have used a lot of tire shine on those tires. The chemicals in a lot of common tire shine products cause the rubber to dry out. Michelin Energy's are especially bad for weather cracking.

I am sorry , but those would lose me my licence in the UK @ 3 points each for bad tyres.
I know quattro is good, but its only as good as the rubber that joins the car to the road. By all means buy used, but please buy 4

that split in power is only when the tires are spinning loose from the ground. I.E.- a burnout.

at normal day to day driving, the power split is 50/50. and the wheels roll the same.. if anything, the fronts should have more wear on them, do to those are the tires you steer the car with..

as long as you are with in 3-5% ROLLING DISTANCE(not width, or heigth, or anything else) then you will be fine. i've seen people run a pair of 35 series tires on one end of their S4, and 40's on the other end. and the rolling distance was less than 2% difference.

Bad assumption on my part. I don't know why I thought Audi used an asymmetric torsen. I could have sworn that when I went for my Haldex seminar, the speaker said something about that.

And the two are not much different. I can only think of three. Coupler, single axle engagement, fully lock.

My, car came with the exact same tires when I bought it. I bought some Kumho Ecsta ASX's once they looked like yours, On different wheels of course.
