I am pretty convinced my 02 sensors have sh*t the bed (getting ~19 mpg and it is not cool. Figured I should replace anyways now and see if that is the culprit). I just ordered replacements and was wondering about the MAF. If that was calling it quits on me too, would my dash throw a CEL?

    Re: MAF question

I'm pretty sure thats only for 2001 and up. So for the original post, this is true. For you its not.

As for the original question, your MAF can be dying on you, but won't throw a cell until it causes a problem. If you've got vag com, log block 002? 115? I forget.. but if you do a search you'll find threads about logging your MAF readings and what it should be reading.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Re: MAF question

Well, if my car can still run effecient without the MAF then it is really futile to even replace? Unless I get a CEL, then I will get a new one just to get rid of the light.

    Re: MAF question

I was getting 20 mpg recently and was throwing a lean code. I logged the MAF and decided to change it. Now I get over 25 avg mpg and like 30 on the highway.

If you don't get a code for 02 sensors (primary is what you really want to replace) then they are fine. Log your maf if you can.

    Re: MAF question

I figure I will just replace all 3 as it would be needed to get done sooner or later anyways. Got the sensors for pretty cheap. Less than $100 brand new Bosch for both and am now looking for MAF.

It's not running efficiently. Yes you should replace it. You will get a cell, p0102 I think.

Where did you get o2 sensors so cheap? Hook me up!

Oh yeah, how many miles are on your car?

    Re: MAF question

I have 112k. But here is the link for the sensors. If you don't mind ebay. I got quoted $109 each somewhere else. And I think he would have sold me 2 of the same, but the AWM uses 2 different sensors.

I just got mine for $67.50 shipped brand new(link). But I got lucky with that one. Here is list for your car. But make sure you get correct one. Read the details on the ads. My stock part number is 06A906461LX. The 'X' is is for replacement and the 'L' before that is for my engine code. Your part number will be similar to this, maybe a different letter instead of the 'L'.

You should take your Vin number and call the dealership to get your part number as not to get the wrong one. That is what I did. And you should really get a new part and not used. I do not see a new one on the list provided, but used ones if you decide to go that route. Just keep checking ebay everyday (type in "98 A4 Air Mass" and it should pull up list) till you find a new one for cheap. You will come across one eventually. Like I said, I just got lucky.

    Re: MAF question

I shelled out $150 for my new MAF and that was through a discounted dealership price. You can buy used ones at a junkyard for like $50.
