Question Upgrading brakes for track: Please help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Crosspost from the B7 A4 cousin hoping to find some good input here.

My first track day on the A4 is coming up and I'm starting to think about brakes. The track is technical with lots of braking required and while I don't want to spend $2k on a BBK, I also don't want to nanny them for fear of toasting them.

Can I get away with an aggressive fluid like Castrol SRF, steel lines and pads (Hawk HPS maybe?) or do I need to look at upgrading the calipers and rotors too? If so, should I just do the fronts or do I need to do the rears too? Can something like Porsche 993 or 996 calipers work? I think they're 4 piston too. I was also thinking of looking into Touareg calipers since a tech mentioned he's done an upgrade using massive Cayanne calipers (sounds expensive though).

Also, any ideas on increasing airflow to the brakes? I think this is a key issue since there seems to be no flow. I was thinking of cutting out a hole on the wheel liner and ducting to scoop and direct air from the fog grilles to the brakes. Anyone tried anything like this?

    TIA

I dont have any solid input on brake kits or lines or anything...BUT! I did come across this DIY for adding brake ducts. It's kinda a ghetto fab but it'll work on the track without putting too many holes in the body right? here's the link

Thanks for the link! I don't care if it's ghetto so long as it works well. I'll go over it tomorrow in more detail. Cheers.

did my first event in April with just a fluid and pad change.

Hawk HPS and good fluid and I had no problems at VIR.. use the money on sway bars and suspension if you havent already you will be glad you did, at least I was.

Re: Upgrading brakes for track: Please help

Thanks for the great feedback guys. I've done some homework this afternoon and have narrowed things down a bit. Firstly, I should say that won't be doing much tracking, which I guess I should've specified before. I'm gunning for around three events for the year plus a dozen autox events.

    Here's what I'm thinking now...

    Carbotech pads - probably X6 or X8
    Castrol SRF fluid
    Nuspeed SS lines
Ducting the brakes to keep them cool

I may also do the S4 upgrade to bigger rotors and carriers but haven't decided yet. If I do it, I'll go with something crossdrilled and slotted.

    Whadaya guys think???

yeah I have been more of a reader than a poster, but after 8 years of reading and 4 great Audis I thought I may be ready to contribute a little.
Louis be prepared it becomes an addiction and the track makes it worse....:)

Pads and fluid are plenty for the # of track days you have planned. Put money into suspension. Once you develop your skills you'll find you use more finesse on the brakes to post faster lap times. Take advantage of the instructors if you're new to this.

Re: Upgrading brakes for track: Please help

Thanks for the well wishes guys and for the record, I'm no noob to motorsports...I'm just new at putting my one-month old A4 on the track...addiction took root long ago. I've already got suspension and today I found a set of light weight wheels and tires for track. RS4 sway is going in next week. The issue with brakes is that I don't plan to keep the car for very long so I don't want to spend too much time or $$$ modding but do need to set things up so the car can work properly.

I'm also not new to Audi as I've had two S6s in the past, I just never tracked them since I didn't get involved in motorsports unitl after I had sold them and had gone through a few other sporst cars.
