upgrade my gtrs to 71r?

So, ATP charges around $900 to upgrade my GTRS to the 71r.

If I wanted to do this myself, could I use a non elim 2871r for parts? What am I using exactly from the 71r?

its cheaper to sell the gtrs and buy a 71r. i'm not convinced thats even worth the upgrade.

It's definitely not worth the upgrade (well at $900). But if I can get a used gt2871r that has other issues not related to the parts I need, I may go this route...

Are you talking going from a GTRS elim to a true GT2871 with a T25 flange?

basically stick with what you have.
I want to get a gt28rs (disco potato) but i dont think its worth the money for the amount of power im going to extract from it.

Not worth it, you wont see all that much of a difference for the money or the trouble.

say your eliminator turbo goes south. Can you buy a full GT2871r take the exhaust housing off of the full turbo and put the eliminator exhaust side on? I think this would be a good alternative if it would work because you can get the E cover(which would flow better than the GT28r housing which is on the current eliminator) and a new CHAR for about the same price as a new eliminator turbo.

mike when did you go BAT? and how did you manage smog prior to registering non-op / trailer buggy...

i'd love to go straight to the gt30r or larger instead of wasting time w/ k04 then gtrs - then maybe modify to a 71r elim if someone can answer my question...

but being in cali, i have smog coming up in 2 months, then i can go crazy if i have money after that...

dual, i know bitterchild has some old posts on upgrading the wheel to make a elim style 71r.

mika is not bad if you know how to monitor your air/fuel. if you don't then you're playing with fire with any programming. a lot of people expect plug n play with bt programming without proper dyno, wideband setups to see what's going on.

You can put a GT2871R cartridge into a GT28R compressor housing, APR has done it before, and so have others, its just a matter of machining the correct profile for the compressor wheel into the housing and then re-assembling.

We have done that at the shop before, its not rocket science, but you'll want to have a good machinist do it for you. Exducer on at GT28RS is 60mm, 2871R has 71mm.

I went BAT back in 2002. I know someone in the VW community which was able to smog my car and even converted the registration so that the car would never have to be smogged again. He used to post on vortex, if you want I can talk to him about doing your car since he just called me again yesterday so I have his new #.
