Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
im interested in lowering my car but dont really want to spend $1500 on coilovers right now. i was wondering if springs would be cool? i mean they are really cheap.. and yeah i know.. save for some coilovers... but i really shouldnt even be buying springs. my real question is... Is someone riding on stock sports suspention with some springs... if you do. how is the ride.. foreal. what do you have and what does it look like..?

    Re: Springs

I have stock sports shocks and Neuspeed race springs.
The ride is much lower than most springs. Alot of people are surprised when I tell them I am not running coilovers.
Mine get the "springy feeling" at low speeds on REALLY sh!tty roads. On highways if theres a dip in the way and your doing 75+ you will feel it a little.

    Hope that helped.

    Re: Springs

OEM shock with after market lowering springs, will make the OEM shock not last very long.

    Why?

The aftermarket springs place greater load and stress on the OEM shocks, which were designed to function with OEM springs.

Lower/stiffer springs demand more from the shocks, and the OEM shocks are not up to the job.

    Hense the "springy feeling"....

If your gonna buy springs, you really need to buy aftermarket shocks like Koni or Bilsteins.

Coil-overs are better, because the springs and shocks are designed to work with each other.

If you consider the price of springs alone, and shocks alone, coil-overs are not that much more expensive.

Do yourself a favor, when you buy springs, buy some good aftermarket shocks too.

Otherwise you'll be paying some mechanic again, a few months down the road, to install shocks...

    Re: Springs

I dont have sport suspension, but I'm running Neuspeed Race on stock susp. The ride is OK but this is only a temporary fix until i get my coilovers. I spent $100 on the springs...not bad for a quick patch so i'm not in 4x4

I'm running H&R springs with stock shocks (sport suspension); however my shocks are on their way out (after about 40000 K)...
you will need to replace the shocks down the road...

    Re: Springs

I'm running Neuspeed Sports on OEM ultra sport shocks.

The ride quality is very do-able...but not ideal. It's harsh and bumpy. I plan to upgrade the shocks down the road, but like you and others, wanted a quick fix for the wheel gap.

Luckily for me, I can do the suspension install myself or with the help of fellow audi club people...so the labor cost is a non issue.

With the neuspeed sports, my rear dropped .9" and the fronts .75". This caused a bit of a sag look in the rear which I'm not too happy with. I plan to either get height adjustable bilsteins or just make a set of metal spacers for the rear to even things out.

    Re: Springs

thanks for the information. my main concern was the ride quality and from what i have read, springs are not what i want for a "quick fix" i guess imma be riding the sports suspention for anouther year or so. i dont think i would ever go spring/shocks combo beause i would like to fine tune it and just fill in my gaps PERFECTLY. but all good i can wait. thanks for the information guys. clean car michgo... nice wheels. i kinda wish i got a avant

Hey, what's crackin', P? Man, I was just about to ask the same question as u. I've been considering lowering my car with stock shocks but didn't know how well it would turn out from a reliability and practicality point of view. The responses pretty much answered my concern..I guess I'm going to hold off too for some coilovers down the road...

Ride quality: it would be more stiff, you would feel much more (bumps) and gonna be afraid of them, lol :))) It is not funny actually, today i was going over a huge speed bump and 2 times my car landed very rough, i felt how something hit the ground pretty bad :(
I wouldnt say i got any gaps on my 17"

    Re: Springs

I am a real newbie here and I have the same type of question. I am not even running the OEM sports suspension, I have the straight stock regular ass suspension. I live in New York, so I do get snow and I want to lower the car just to make it look a little more aggressive (I would like to get my car to look like the A4's with the sports suspension, I don't really want to go as low as it would be with coilovers). Then I want to put some 19's on the car IF its feasible, if not I am perfectly fine with 18's. I want a clean setup, not extreme. Any advice?
