I'm lazy and drive in too much traffic to feel like dealing with a clutch. However there are days I wish I had gotten a 6-speed.

MT6. I like control. The "tip-tronic" is not DSG yet and thus I have no reason to change. Once a fully driver-controlled DSG unit is available I will opt for that. No one can argue with seamless power and automatic throttle blips!

Sooooo much traffic in Northern Virginia but the 6 speed is definitely worth it for weekend drives through the twisties down to my families lake house and for the back roads that are slowly being turned into highways.

6 speed manual, never owned an auto tranny and we have tons of traffic in my area. If it doesn't have a clutch (3rd pedal) I will not purchase or drive the car.

Yeah, I know California is worse... I used to live a little north of L.A. (before I could drive) but I do remember my dad being completely pissed off almost everyday he came home from work. You can definitely find places that look like that in Northern Virginia; like the Beltway (I-495). But yeah, I think I saw a ranking last year and L.A. was the worst in the country and I believe Northern Virginia was 3 or 4. Luckily I live pretty close to work and I can avoid the major highways and make the 8 mile journey in about 30-40 minutes... I'm sure we both feel each others pain.

    Re: 6-Speed or Slush Box?

I test drove the 6speed manual and auto of the 2.0T and couldn't stand it in automatic form. I was dead set on getting a 6 speed until i drove the 3.2 automatic. Felt it was more than adequate and for some reason at least to me didn't idle as harsh as the 2.0. I found a great deal on the 3.2 and thats what I have now.

6MT here. I too test drove the Auto 2.0T and hated it. I had to actually be conviced to go back and try the manual. Two completely different cars. I love it.

    Re: 6-Speed or Slush Box?

MT6.... is a must. I deal with the same situation of traffic. Going anywhere from LA>Long Beach>Inland Empire. I thank God for having 6 speed bcuz if I didn't im sure I would have fell asleep at the wheel at some moment seeing how I drive through all rush hour traffic time. Also with the MT6 you have complete control of your car over the CVT which is slower. There is no excuse esp. after all the threads of hearing how many people wish they had an MT6.

p.s. I came form an automatic and the only reason I can see myself going back to one is if my job made me drive the company truck or any truck for that option.

    Have 1998 B5 A4 2.8 5MT and 2008 B7 Avant 2.0T 6MT.

My wife and I know we made the right decision as it's sounding like the B8 Avants for North America will be tiptronic only. Now if they were DSG/S-Tronic I might have to think again...

I voted auto since my a4 is tiptronic. however, my other car is a 5-speed so i have one of each and both transmissions are perfectly suited for what i need them for. the dsg is awesome and my next car will likely have it.

    Re: 6-Speed or Slush Box?

I will always buy a 6 speed if possible. Rowing through the gears is much more fun and challenging to me than just hitting a paddle shifter. I could care less about the "0.2" increase in time when shifting via a DSG or other shifting technology. It takes much more patience and skill to drive a manual transmission car than an automatic.

    The cars I own[ed] are

1997 Acura Integra GS-R (only comes in stick)
    1998 Acura Integra GS-R
    2003 Acura CL Type S (6 speed)

And next on the horizon is a 2.0T Avant with 6speed that I'm dying to take delivery of next month. I can't wait for it to hit the dock.

I've been driving in traffic for many years here in so cal and driving a stick in traffic never phased me because I enjoy driving that much. The only reason why I joined a vanpool was to save time and money in gas. Otherwise I'd still be driving my cars in traffic and wouldn't have a problem with it.

I've always driven manual transmission cars; I have a tough time with auto-trans. The last time I tried to drive an auto-trans car; I parked it by moving the gear selector out of "D" into "N" and pulled the e-brake up. Then for the next 30 minutes I proceeded to be frustrated as I could not remove the key from the steering column. I called my dad after this and he told me that I'm supposed to put the gear selector into "P" for "Park"... doh! I never knew this before!

I had a tiptronic GTI, but I must say the Audi is much better feel and works quite smoothly with the mods I have done

    Re: 6-Speed or Slush Box?

For 18 years I have owned a manual. Recently I actually chose a slushbox so that:
    1) it would 'sort of' prevent me from tracking it (now have more prioritie$)
    2) work commute is all city now and I was tired shifting, dialing, and drinking at the same time.
    3) wife can drive a manual but I am not comfortable with her driving it (i.e. her pulling in after running errands with that nice burnt clutch smell). FYI I let her drive my car to run errands since her daily is a minivan.
    4) Felt that in a weird quirky way I would really miss my S4 if the A4 was a manual.
