    Quick tire Question

    Yes, I did Search!! haha and also pmed onemoremile about the question.

    the question is, I just got some 17" celebration rs4 wheels and some 245/45/17 tires, would i have any rubbing issues with that, the wheel is 7.5 wide. Here is where my car sits at rite now.
    help will be greatly appreciated.

    As I told you via PM, the 245/45-17 is too tall. It is an inch wider and an inch taller than stock. A 245 is also too wide for a 7.5" wheel. The correct tire size would be a 225/45-17 or if you wanted a little extra width a 235/40-17 could be squeezed on there.

    I ran a 245/40-17 on 17x8 and it fit fine but that tire ran narrow for it's size. If I had gone with a Sumi HTR Z which runs very wide it would never have fit. The fender lips were rolled and sealed and the liner was cut back. The 245/40 did hit the liner before trimming and that was on stock sport suspension.


    Here is why it is so important. The control arms come very close to the tire and they don't leave much room. If you rub one you'll have a nasty blowout.


    This is the rear with the 245/40-17 on 17x8 et35 wheels. Add a half inch height and it gets damn close. Remove a half inch of wheel width and the tread and sidewall bow out a little making it worse. If the backspacing isn't right then it will definitely rub. I'm not talking about bumps either but all the time.

    add in good suspension and a 225 or 235 will out perform a 245 any day

    I wouldn't go that far. It depends on what they are used for. Tall and skinny is great for good mpg, long tread life, and great freeway manners while fatties are great for corner carving. I'd like to run a 245 or 255 for the track but fitment can get complicated.

    Picture yourself driving along the highway, (just slightly over the limit, well, more than a little) and the sports news comes on the radio. The announcer mentions Shaquille O'Neal. Now, that guy has pretty big feet, but does he put more rubber on the ground with his Reeboks than your tires put on the road ? Hard to believe, but Shaq puts more rubber down than most cars do. The contact patch of most tires is about the size of your hand and has to handle a lot more weight and force than those big Reebok's do.

    The shape of a tire's contact patch or "footprint" greatly influences its performance and is dependent on its profile or "aspect ratio". Low profile tires (most performance tires) have a short and wide contact patch that is effective in converting the driver's input into very responsive handling, cornering stability and traction...especially on dry roads.

    High profile tires (light truck and most passenger tires) have a long and narrow contact patch which helps to provide predictable handling, a smooth ride and especially good traction in snow.

    Ok so that statement was a little off. Where I was going with that is, that the tire doesn't make the car handle 100x better. 225 Falken Azenis out perform any 235 or 245 All seasons I've seen.

    235/45-17 on 17x8 et35 on coilovers.


    245/40-17 on 17x8 et35 on stock sport suspension. Same tires as in the wheelwell pics above. If lowered they might fit but it would be damn close. If they were an inch taller (245/45-17) I don't think they would clear at all.
