    Volkswagen gurus... need advice

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I want to get either a Golf or GTI. I dont know how you guys call MK?? or whatever but the body would be just before the one thats out now. MK4 right? Im looking for the most gas friendly motor so im assuming the 1.8t. This car is to be bone stock (yeah right) and used as a commuter only to get my kids to school, back, and get my girl to school and back.

I also need reliability. What goes out on these cars? Coil packs an issue just like the 1.8t in the Audis?

Im looking for an automatic. White, black, silver, or red. 60k miles or less. I also want to spend up to $8 - $10k cash. If I have to finance, I might as well buy a brand new one [O_O]

I hate the gas milage on my Yukon. I spend over $100 a week in gas and another $100 a week on my BMW.

I checked vwvortex but it seems like nothing is on that site.

I would look into a civic like someone else said. While the GTI isn't a bad car (I own a 20th anniversary), the repair costs are basically the same as your Audi. The 1.8T has the same coilpack issues. I do mostly highway driving and can get about 320 miles to a tank.

Thats why im kinda researching this right now. I dont think the wifey would wanna be caught in a Civic. If I can find something cheap then ill keep the Yukon and only use it on the weekends during family outings.

The 1.8t gets about 22 city and 30 highway. Thats all good in my book while the Yukon only gets 12/16.

the 2L gets even better mpg. but its gutless, if you like power, get the turbo. in terms of reliability the real issue comes from the previous owner on how they maintained and drove it. i personally lucked out and only put maybe $300 the first year i bought one (vr). AND from what i have driven, the vw auto is MUCH better than civic autos (responsiveness and sloppy feeling). but maybe the new civics have fixed that?

Just be careful of the earlier Mk4 models with 1.8t automatics. Don't remember if it included the gti and golf, but the jetta had some major transmission issues.

    MKIV diesels FTW!

You can get the 2.0 or the 1.8t. The VR6 is a bit gas thirsty. For your purpose, get a civic/corolla.

But in all honesty, if you can find a well kept MKIV Jetta TDI, I'd get it. But the diesel will be out of your price. The gas version, will be under what you are willing to spend.

Repairs are not that bad either.

I could care less really. I wont be driving this car The only VW I could see myself in is the Toureg (I couldnt afford a new one though) or the Tiguan (priced right for a brand new SUV).

The motor I really want is the 2.7BT

My friend has a bunch of mk4 gti/jettas for sale. I will talk to him about what he can do. The cars are in Hayward. Btw my friend has a mk4 gti 1.8t and with a test pipe and intake only he could take me chipped with an intake (b5 a4Q)

I used to work at a VW dealership as a sales person and knew the service techs pretty well, they had a lot of cars come in for transmission repair. Don't remember exactly what the problem was but they had issues on the earlier years. I had a 2001 Gti VR6 and it was a great car, I loved it. Good power and alot of fun to drive, but MPG was horrible. I had full exhaust, cold air, GIAC chip, 75 wet NOS and other bolt ons so my MPG was not quite the stock listed numbers. Oh yeah, not sure how the Gti's are now, but my VR6 was made in Germany, not in Mexico or Brazil. I think that makes a huge difference.

I used to have a 2000 Golf 2.0L 4 cylinder manual for about 3 years. Nice car easy to maintain cheap , but feels a little underpowered. Sure the 1.8T comes with the same issues of oil sluge and coilpacks.
You may want to look into some Jetta wagon?? This come really cheap as they are wagons but more roomy for your kids.
Also just to let you know, the Mk.4 Golf made it to the US in 2000 I believe. You could get the car already in Germnay from 1998 on. So most bugs should have been solved. This is true with most Audi, VW cars. They are 1-2 years behind Germanys release.

if you're looking to use it mainly for commuting/kids purposes then mk4 golf would be good. get a 2.0 liter 4 door for more space and better gas mileage.

I passed by one VW dealership today in Vallejo and they had nothing used. All the new stuff is well over $20k.

Im gonna hit Concord or Oakland tomorrow during or after work. Internet does no justice looking for this car. Seems like not to many people wanna get rid of their VW's.

MkVs arer made in Germany. This is the main reason why I went back to VW since I pretty much gave up on them back in 1995.

MO, if you pass by Team VW in Hayward, ask for Joseph or Abi. Tell them I referred you. They'll remember me as the guy who traded in the fixed up Scion...LOL!

I would bro trust me Problem is, my wifey wont be caught dead in a Civic

I have been trying to sway towards even a Mazda 3 HB. The only thing she seems willing to drive that has ok MPG is the Golf, GTI, or Rabbit within our price range. She also like the Mini and HHR but they just are not within budget right now.

Because im looking for an automatic =)

BTW... since we've been car shopping, my better 1/2 for some reason is wanting the Chevrolet HHR. I've done the research and it seems like an ok car at 32mpg in the 07' - 08's. I have been seing them for no more than 13k but nobody seems willing to meet us at $10.5k cash

LOL at how you have to pick your fights with the scion

Ken was probably looking for his next AutoX class. Maybe a bunch of us will re-start with HS in the future, so we will be competing with XB vs Fit vs Yarz vs Smart

Mo, in case we do start in HS, pick a car that meets that class. The new rabbit is not too shabby and better than a Mazda 3 in power and handling. If you get the HHR, the white Fit will ownz you bad

I must admit, just with the TRD springs and Koni FSD shocks, the xB was transformed into a great little handling car. With the headers, exhaust, and AEM intake, it had to be pushing about 110HP
