What the smeg is that clanking/rattling?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
When I hit bumps/potholes/ridges I get a clankey/rattley noise that sounds as if it's coming from the wheels. I thought it could be the hub caps (s-line wheels) but they don't appear to be loose. What else could it be?
I just had an alignment done, so surely if it was anything to do with that stuff they should have noticed it.
Hopefully one you guys know, Thanks

S-line came with hub caps? WTF?

You know I had a weird rattle that was driving me crazy too. I figured it was a control arm since those are common problems for us. When I actually looked lastnight I found the rear ABS sensor bracket had broken. It was rattling around and slapping the suspension. Two zipties later all is well. Mine was a freak easy fix. I think yours might be more in depth...like control arms.

If you have the BBS wheels like me it might be the center caps rattling because I have had that too.

I had the same problem with my car once and when i took it in to the shop we found out one of the clips for the brakes or pads had fell off or were loose can't remember. Hopefully yours is the same thing.

It's def the pads, I hate going over bumps because it makes so much noise. Try this, next time you go over bumps, push your brakes down about half way just enough to contact the rotor, if the noise does stop then you know its your pads. I'm waiting for my brakes to wear out alittle more and I will probably upgrade to ECS stage 1 brakes.

most of the time its either your shock thats blown out or the rubber bump stop at the top is worn and the shock is loose, so every time you hit a bump the shock rattles.

Shock and strut noise is different, it doesn't rattle. It's definately the brake pads, I have the same exact problem. When I took my car to Audi they took the whole front end of the car appart for nothing and it wound up being the brakes.

The brakes appear to be the problem, I haven't tested extensively but when touching the brakes and going over bumpy road, it's silent, as it should be.
Now how do I fix it?

If your rotors are good, just change the pads and make sure to install the clips. Im just gonna upgrade my whole brake system, if it still makes noise, ill leave the car unlocked with the key inside in the middle of the Bronx lol

I think the rotors are warped as well, so I guess when they're done I'll do pads and rotors.

Ok this is driving me nuts, I've gotta get it fixed. Doea anyone know what part I need to buy to stop these pads from rattling? I went to the Audi service department and the 2 guys there think I have to buy new pads and all. I think not.
    Any help?

So your saying, if a lot of the rotor is worn down then I just need to replace them as it won't stop rattling?
