Unhappy Good place to buy a replacement motor??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i have unfortunately gotten the "code of death" the dreaded oil sludge issue! i unfortunately do my own oil changes and have no record of the oil changes i have done with very expensive royal purple and k&n oil filters every 3500 miles that tie directely to my A4 (in other words a reciept that has my audi a4 vin on it to prove the oil was for my car). so i am replacing my motor, and am curious where a good place to buy a long or short block would be? i seem to be drawn to the eurospecsport.com engines. they have very strong internals and high end parts in them (i.e. je pistons, arp fastners, etc). i would like something maybe mildly modified for strength and maybe bump up the compression a little but nothing crazy.

    thanks in advance,

    chad

Re: Good place to buy a replacement motor??

Are you the first owner? How many miles? What year model is it (2002)? is the engine seized? Or you are getting the low oil pressure light and your oil level is actually good. Have you removed the valve cover and looked at the bearing caps? before you give up on Audi sludge warranty, look at all aspects. It might end-up costing you more than what is car might be worth to you. The car in its as-is condition is not worth much. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Good place to buy a replacement motor??

it is a 2002 audi a4 quattro 5-speed. i am the second owner, it had only 32k on it when i bought it a little over a year ago and now has 59,590k on it. it isnt seized and actually runs good but the rpm was fluctuating the other day and i got a cel. so i had a co-workers husband look at it with the VAG, he is an Audi master-guild technician. i got a code that has to do with the cam timing speed or something to that extent. he thought it was strange that i havent gotten a oil pressure warning light. the cel went out on it's own after about 4 starts but he said pretty much that was the code of death. he is going to look through the motor for me and let me know if it is bad or not. i always plan for the worst when it comes to a situation so i am planning out a engine swap if i have to. i can get a forged internals stroker motor long block for a little over $4k. that isnt bad to me considering the car is worth around 13k to 14k and i plan on keeping it.

Re: Good place to buy a replacement motor??

Ok, so far so good. Do not drive anymore until you find out what the problem is? Do you know what was DTC #? It could be a bad cam sensor not necessarily sludged engine? If the cam sensor is good, as a precaution, have the oil pump suction tube inspected by someone who has borescope using the oil level sensor hole. When the engine seizes due to sludge issues, this oil pickup tube is guaranteed to be clogged. The pickup tube is cheap but you have to drop the oil pan. If you can handle it, then you saved the labor expense.

Usually, oil sludge requires ones to change quite a few other odds and ends, such as oil cooler, turbo, certain piping etc and ofcourse the labor to remove and install. Again, if you can drop the engine and re-install, a lot of money can be saved. If indeed, its a oil sludge issue, first look into Audi sludge warranty with all your documention. In my neck of woods, a 2002 A4 1.8T is perhaps around 9 to 10k.

Re: Good place to buy a replacement motor??

i keep getting told by people if i cant prove my oil changes then it isnt worth the trouble to take it to the dealer because they wont warranty it. i have the reciepts from the previous owner since he went to the dealer for them. i do my own every 3500 miles but no reciepts. what is your suggestion?

i will find the cel # for you.

Re: Good place to buy a replacement motor??

I thought you said in post#1 that you have oil and filter purchase reciepts. Make sure you hand write the dates and mileage when you did the oil change, or present the oil change log and attach purchase reciepts to back-it up. Audi's recommended oil change interval is 10K, so you should be ok since you did oil changes around 3.5k. How far is the dealership? Do you have AAA membership? get one now, you get 4 free tows in a year. Not much to lose, before you say I will pay for the engine and labor. If the engine is running good and you have not seen oil pressure light, I am not really sure if it is oil sludge issue all togather.

Re: Good place to buy a replacement motor??

Understand, that none of the retail places (walmart, pepboys, autozone etc) will not show the VIN on oil or filter purchase reciepts. Your log will indicate the VIN, model, mileage and date or you can hand write this info on the reciepts. Since you acquired the A4, did you had any of the free oil changes done at Audi since 32K, like 40k and 50k? In reality all you may need is 2 oil change reciepts, since 1st owner did 10k, 20k, and 30k. I am still not convinced that you have sludge problem. Regular oil changes with SYN, is supposed to keep you away from sludge / coking etc.

Re: Good place to buy a replacement motor??

i am hoping it isnt a sludge problem. the car really runs good and i have only used (what i consider) the best syn products out there. I am going to NGP Racing this weekend for my 1+ upgrade and am having them look at the codes and give me their opinion as well.
