Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

    Hi,

Did my ATP Manifold & GTRS this weekend, actually just took us 6hours which i think is fair considering no one of us (we were two) have ever been down the hood on the car;-) just waiting for my ECU, injectors and sparks from ecodetuning before i can fire up the beauty!:D cant wait!!!
anyways, im fairly new to working on cars on this levels, but hey, how else are ya going to learn?

first of all, on this picture you can see the golden thingie, for the oil. (dont know what its called in english) is not "down" in the turbo, but this is the only way we could figure it to be correct? we're thinking about using rings, but it wasnt included, nor did i see that on the ATP gtrs install pdf i read. And it seemed like it was a bit "from" the turbo there aswell:

and the next, lol this was crazy.. how the %¤#%#¤ do you get to tighten these bolts? its so MAD spaced in there, hardly room for oxygen! Pic of what tool you used would be GREAT!

Also, i replaced the stock coolant line in the top, but in the kit there was another piece of hose, a lot bigger and shorter.. couldnt figure where and what to use it (then again, we've not installed the air intake and stuff again, maybe i will need to replace something then cause of space??)

Hmmm.. i had one more question, but i forgot it!:)

Thanks a lot you guys, cant wait to post you some pictures!

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

I think the big hose is to replace the hard pipe from the SAI pump. The nuts are a nightmare to tighten. You have to go slow and use a12mm to make it easier I grinded the hell out of it to make it skinnier and then bended the end with a torch lol
    Unitronic tuned. love it.

Need any services done in NYC area please PM me. I will diagnose and fix your car. Also do clutch replacements, Timing-belt services, Turbo upgrade/installation, Fluid changes, boost leaks and pretty much anything.

What if you were to use a 12mm socket (1/4" drive) with a universal? That is what I use on my manifold (Treadstone-like)

This is what you'll need to tighten a few of the nuts.

Its not that hard. Well, I don't think its that hard. I had my downpipe, turbo, manifold and intake out of my car Saturday morning in under 2hours. Complete with a coolant drain.

Thanks a lot for the comments, tips and such guys! i will try to bend my own wrench (is that the name for a 12mm key thats "hard" all the way? ;)) and use that!

Also, is that golden thingie where the oil inlet is really suppose to be like this?

and yeah, take it from me who dont really know TOO much about cars, it went fairly well... just be sure to take a GOOD amount of time to study everything, take a lot of pictures, and read the AWESOME DIY thats out there from the forum, and a4mods.com.

Yes it is, the oil fitting does not go all the way in since it is a pipe thread so it has a taper to it. You can apply a very little bit of liquid teflon to the threads but do it so that the teflon just gets threaded in as you tighten the fitting.

even those are hard to use on the manifold...I know people at the dealer that actualy make their own tool like the one shown in this thread...bending and welding your own together.

i think that would work well.

and no need to bend a wrench like that one above either. snapon, craftsman, mac, and most tool companys already make wrenches like that. just buy one.

I did mine the first time with a wrench that I heated and bent it and then after my manifold cracked, the 2nd time I did it with this identical tool

Snap-On 1/4" drive 12mm shallow swivel socket and it was pretty much a walk in the park. It took a 1/4 of the time.

Get it from Snap-On. The Craftsman version from Sears is too large for the manifold.

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

Just to clarify, the gold piece is the oil inlet restrictor, required for all DBB Garrett turbo's. It will not thread in fully, the turbo threads are tapered and it also seals metal to metal inside the turbo. The large tubing supplied with the kit is for the SAI but with the kits I have installed it was not needed. You should have also received some 6an tubing (coolant line) which is used to extend the OEM coolant return line. Cut off the fitting that is crimped to it off the OEM turbo, use the brass barb supplied with the kit. You should need to extend the coolant return line about 6-8"

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

    thanks a lot again everyone,
good to know a4ringed18T, cause it really looks like its gonna screw itself out;-) ill head over to the hardware store tomorrow and see if i can pick up the kind of tools i need to proper tighten the manifold!

Hehe, i just removed the whole old coolant line and used the tubing for a complete new one :)

I also have a question regarding the boost nipple and the wastegate on the turbo, guess both should go on the TIP, but which goes on what?;-)

Ill try to get some pics up later!

    Thanks you guys!

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

You will also need a piece of the tubing and two banjo's to make the coolant feed. The nipple on the turbo goes to the boost controller (N75/MBC/EBC) then off the boost controller to the wastegate. Neither goes to the TIP

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

Sure took some time to get the injectors to complete the install! hopefully going to complete this tomorrow :)
anyways, the out\inlet plug on the end of the turbo, goes in the top of this: i guess, but the one with the "strange" connector, should i just remove it and plug it to the wastegate? Why is that plug so special anyways, dunno the word for it in english.

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

Thats the N75, it controls boost. The connection to the left with the banjo on it connects to a boost signal (@ the turbo) and the connection going up goes to the wastegate. It absolutely needs to be in place unless your running a MBC/EBC

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

What would i do without ringed? ;-) yeah, i've figured that much, i just dont see how the banjo connection fits anywhere at the turbo.. :o

i assume the golden connector is where the banjo should be, but the only way to make that work is to remove the banjo and pust the hose straight on... but thats okay, riiiight? :)

Thanks again for your good help, a4ringed.

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

With the size of the GTRS and the two connections being in different places, very doubtful you will get those two pieces of hose to work. Break the one time use clamps off at the N75 and replace them with longer ones. It will save the OEM ones if you ever decide to go back to stock and will make it a hell of alot easier to connect them if they are a tad longer. By tad longer I mean 2-4", as needed. Very important with the boost signal and wastegate signal lines is that you keep them as short as possible, you want the least amount of delay between the turbo giving a set boost, the N75/boost controller interpreting it, and then getting that signal to the wastegate. The shorter the better, rule of thumb is less than 12" for each, keep that in mind when making new lines!

ah, i see.... will most def do :) i've already installed the neuspeed so it will be mounted on that TIP. maybe the oem will do with a little strech... but the part about removing the banjo and slippin' it on the golden connector is the right way, yes?

Sorry was referring to his question about removing the banjo and connecting that line to the boost source on the turbo.

Regarding the tool, couldnt tell ya, I didnt have to use anything special other than some wrenches I already had in my tool box

like 4 ringed just said, you need to remove the banjo connector (or replace the hose which is better) and attach it to the gold barb where the turbo blows out. I did my GTRS about a month ago and got my stage 3 Revo flash last Monday, LOVING IT!

Hmm. The craftsman version might work on my car then. A 12mm 1/4" drive socket with universal fit on all but one. The one was tight so I think a built-in universal from Sears will work for me. Guess I'll find out because my exhaust components are getting bolted up this weekend

Re: Did my GRTS this weekend, left with a few questions!

went down to the car today, and you are indeed correct, i'have to extend the lines quite a bit, but i figured it should land under 30cm regardless (12"). Ill try to get out and buy someone tomorrow, also i didnt pay attention to where the n75 was mounted before (seem to have a mount bracket) but i cant imagine it making any difference if it ever was anyway:)
