Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Which throw reduction setting are you running: 25% of 5%?

Do you have the stock shifter height or 1inch reduction in height?

I'm going to order one up and was curious to know what everyone's running. My B&M is getting tossed. Its a sloppy mess. Figured the JHM will compliment my JHM shifter stabilizer bushings and linkage upgrade

    Thanks in advance, everyone!

I actually send the same question to Jayson.

I'd also like to know what others have opted for. I just want to get the feeling of a B7 3.2 Sline A4 I drove. The shifter was smoother and shorter than my B6

Re: Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

I got the 25% with 1" height reduction.

It not exactly the same as the 40% reduction my AMS unit had, but the throw is still quite short (I estimate @ 30% reduction) and I got used to it pretty fast.

Once you tweak out the shifter and install a nice heavy knob on it the unit engages like butter.

Re: Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

Your poll is flawed as it only offers one choice to a two part question.

I have mine set at 25% reduction and stock height with the linkage and stabilzer bushing too.

The car shifts way better than (no comparison whatsoever) and the other day Tracee called me up and was bitching about how shitty our 337 (GTI) shifter felt compared to the Audi.

Re: Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

25% and the 1" shorter = what you want! i still really wish he made the 40% shorter throw for the 5-speed, but he said there just isnt enough demand to make it worth producing

I just realized that. Crap. Sorry. I don't see a way to change the poll itself.

Looks like 25% reduction is the way to go.

On the fence on whether or not I should go 1inch shorter in shifter height.

Re: Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

I left mine the stock length becaue it provides more leverage whan you need to really bang the shit out of the gears.

The only thing that I do not like about short shifters is that 1st and 3rd gear are not in natural positions for me. I would prefer for them to be higher up and the throw going down to be what was shortened.

Re: Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

I went with the stock height plus the linkage upgrade. I like it just fine but have nothing to compare it to (other than the cheap OEM shifter). In hindsight I might have ordered it with a -1" height. I think mine is the 25% reduction (don't remember this as an option when I bought it)...but can't you change this by switching some pins around?

The quality of this part is fantastic...a real piece of machining art!

p.s. - there's just one shifter and it'd adjustable to 25% and 5% reductions. (just to clear that up, cuz some replies make it look like there's two different shifters)

I currently have the JHM shifter linkage (u-joint) and bushings (for the solid arm) and a B&M short throw shifter. I've been thinking about the short throw shifter because everyone always comments how low it is. I think its low height is what is causing a 1-2 shift to bind and sometimes a 2-3 shift to bind when really getting on it. If you think about it, the moment arm from your hand to the shifter rod is reduced. It takes more force to shift it since the moment arm is reduced. I think that's why it binds on me. Hence my wanting to go back to a stock-height shifter and a more solid shifter like the JHM. I haven't heard one negative comment from anyone about Jay's products and I'm a big fan of them. The linkage upgrade and bushings was like night and day. I can only imagine what the shifter adds.

Looking like I'll get the stock height and set it up initially with 25%. If I don't like that I'll adjust it to 5%.

Re: Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

I never had an issue with gear selection or the binding once the shifter position is tweaked after installation.

It did take much longer to adjust the JHM to find its sweet spot than the AMS unit it replaced.

Thanks man, that means a lot. Mainly since I have personally crafted every single JHM shifter to date. It fact, it is the reason why I own an S4.

I take these parts very seriously. They undergo extreme tolerances to ensure everything fits and works flawlessly.

I have the regular height and love it. I also came from a B&M and after installing all of the JHM parts on my car it was a night and day difference.

Re: Question for those of you with a JHM shifter...

    JHM 'solid' shifter installed:

OEM on left, B&M short throw in center, JHM 'solid' shifter on right

Is this set at 25% reduction in throw? Its on the bottom hole of the shifter and the bottom hole of the adapter. It feels like a reduction in throw.

I can't wait to drive the car now. If feels so solid just going through the gears with the engine turned off. The OEM height with the reduction in throw and weight balance of the JHM feels great!
