I'm a total noob at this, so dont flame me, but I have so many e85 pumps here in Indiana.. since it burns at a higher octane, wouldnt it get us better performance?.. or will the alcohol eat at our fuel systems?

You will lose power and gas mileage. Ethanol is crap.

Well, in theory yes, there is a company here in MN doing a plug and play type software for all fuel injected motors to use E85 and get the same gas mileage, I've seen it, and it is possible, it's just a matter of getting someone who has the tuning software and can work with the audi engine management system

Re: E85. is it possible to use in our cars?

Wait Wait Wait -- Do not put e85 in your car for the love of god...

Ethanol is highly corrosive and standard fuel systems can only accept a mix of 10% or less without severely jeopardizing the health of your car. E85 cars have special materials in their tanks, pumps, fuel lines, fuel filters, rails and injectors... there are conversion kits available for some cars, but it involves replacing all of the components that come in contact with the fuel for extended periods of time.

I don't know whether this is available for the S4 or not, either way, don't put e85 in your car.

Thats not completely right, you will GAIN power but lose gas mileage... ethanol usually carries a higher octane level.

    DONNNNNNNNT DO IT!!

I work for an automotive supplier that develops fuel systems...we have special components specifically for E85. Your car does not have them...trust me!

E85 has way less energy contained within it than gasoline, mileage will be lower no matter what tuning is done.

Re: E85. is it possible to use in our cars?

If i'm not mistaken, there is a lower air/fuel ratio required when using ethenol as well, as more ethonal (fuel) is required to burn efficiently, which would require higher flowing fuel injectors in our cars to make the same power. I was toying with the idea of making the switch in my sti before i sold it since it ran on 100 octane already and ethenol was a cheaper way to get the same performance (it was a jdm 2.0 liter sti motor, and the thing just LOOOOOVED more and more timing, not to mention a few more lbs of boost)

(Someone please correct me if i'm wrong)

Why would you even want to? It's a performance car, not a hybrid, buy the highest octane you can and enjoy it!

Re: E85. is it possible to use in our cars?

Ethanol has less potential energy per unit than gasoline.

Ethanol has a higher octane level than gasoline--this has nothing to do with power, its simply to say at what point the fuel will ignite in regards to temperature and pressure.

Ethanol in the U.S. is derived from Corn.

It takes 1.5 Gallons of gas to make 1 gallon of Ethanol in the U.S.

It would take a country 6 times the size of the U.S. to produce enough corn to have every car in the U.S. running on E85.

Because of the demand put on Ethanol because of a combination of E85 and Ethanol used as an oxygenate in regular gas food costs all over the world are going up.

As a result people who can't even afford to buy a car, let alone shoes, can't even afford food to feed themselves now.

So why is it you wanted to put E85 in your car?

yea, it says in the owners manual to not use anything higher than E10 in our cars.

I see you're a typical idiot who knows nothing about ethanol......A properly tuned car will make MORE power on ethanol.....

I don't believe this, for years the government has paid farmers to not grow certain crops in order to keep the prices up. (farm welfare) We waste more food crops than some countries consume, farmers have let crops spoil rather than put it into the market, we also give away more food than many countries produce (tax credits without it we would not do it).

Do you think it is a accident that we use the worst source of ethanol, corn growers have a lot of pull in Washington, people are getting rich off corn so nothing will change anytime soon.

e85 blows. the government was talking about raising the normal e10 in gas to e15 and car manufactures said they would void all warrenties and that their cars can hardly handle the 10% in gas.....boo ethanol

You are correct, no need to be harsh. I was ill informed. But using it in a car not designed for it would have detrimental effects, so, not advised. The vehicles that can use it in this country have less efficiency with it as well. I assumed the less efficiency was due to less octane, I was wrong.
