Looking for a DIY rear wheel bearing on a 00 avant quattro. Does anyone have a link?

Re: Is there a DIY wheel bearing

Are you talking about replacing the actual bearing itself or getting to the point where you can take the bearing to a shop to have it pressed in/out?

It's not really a job for the DIY without the proper press or renting a Hub Shark.

There is also the Sir Tools B90 Master Kit. You can see that in action on Youtube. I bought this a month ago and it is great. You can get som better pricing on it if you search. The video made it look a lot easier than it was for me. But it still wasn't bad.

Check the DIY section on Audiworld. Its actually a pretty easy job. Should take about two hours pending PITA bolts. $60 for the bearing and $30 for Pep Boys to press it for you. Seriously easy.

It always took me forever to get the control arms re-aligned to the spindle, so I could bolt it back up. Besides that, its pretty straightforward. Not too hard if you have the right tools.

Re: Is there a DIY wheel bearing

I don't understand buying a tool that is $350 when you can just have it pressed for $30 at pep boys. Even if you replace 4 bearing, its still only $120. Besides my B5 I have never replaced a wheel bearing on any of my other cars.

Time: Lee Auto near me turn around time is 24 hours usually. With the tool you have to pull the whole upright, and should have an alignment after reinstalling. With Hub Shark or Sir Tools B90 the upright stays in the car and does not need an alignment after. The tools saves the trips to the auto parts store and for the alignment. For me that is worth the price alone.

Re: Is there a DIY wheel bearing

if you are good with a marker you don't need an alignment. there is an adjustment bolt on the lower control arm. mark the orientation with a white out pen. when you reinstall, rotate the bolt to match up the marks.
