Hacking apart the arm rest - any tips?

    Hi folks,

I love the arm rest, but it's just too damn tall to use and shift at the same time.

Rather than just rock it pointing up for the whole time I own my A4, I'm thinking of lowering it by about 6 inches.

Near as I can tell, this requires taking off the plastic cover, dismantling the assembly and having my buddy's metal shop fabricate a shorter metal pillar with the same bolt patterns.

Anyone else tried this before? Am I walking into a mine field?

I just found out last night that you can push the button that you use to lower it from standing up, and it goes down another 4" from normal. I didn't believe my friend until he showed me on my car, haha.
