'01 Passat 2.8L V6 & '01 S4 2.7L V6 the same?

W/out the turbo's of course.

I'm hearing from a pretty reputable mechanic friend that from his point of view they're very, very similar. Not necessarily interchangeable parts but the design is pretty darned close.

How true is this?

Is the Passat's 2.8L V6 a basically bored out version of the Audi 2.7L V6 w/out the turbo's? I mean sure there's a different ecu and other minor differences but are they pretty close?

If not the same what's different from a mechanical pov.

You can use the cams and manifold. I know that much.

no it's equal as a 2.8 audi A4 or A6 block, similatities but not the same.

2 bolts main bearings, etc...

Well, not planning to swap parts or anything like that. Just wondering if someone who can work on a 2.8V6 Passat would be competent at working on my S4.

Do you mean that 2.8 only have 2 bolts main caps instead of four?

Yes. Swap heads, and cams.

i got an oil pan from a 2.8 passat on my 2.7 when mine cracked

when i went to get oil filters from a vw dealership...i heard a mechanic say "its the same as the passats v6"...its funny because the audi dealership is right down the street and i save $10 on an oil filter by buying it from vw
