I know this subject has been played over and over - however, I think I found a new twist for us penny-pinching S4 Owners. I'm NOT going to debate the HP value - I view this exercise as a "Reusable filter conversion" (i.e. the last air filter I'll ever have to buy).
I never intended to do the Darintake mod - until I went to Autozone yesterday to replace the OEM filter that was disintegrating. They wanted $19.99 for the FRAM OEM replacement and almost $50 for the K&N drop in. I just happened to be on the Ricer isle and saw the cones selling for $19.99. On the same isle was exhaust bits - including a 3" tailpipe section for $5. Turns out the bend is perfect for the Darintake mod. No visit to the muffler shop required.
The only hacking required is to cut the angled tip off of the tailpipe. It fits so snug into the MAF hole that I think it wouldn't even need to be glued - but to be safe, I used a bit of plastic epoxy to lubricate the pipe and it slid right in.
