CAR UPDATE: Mounting the ECU in its new location...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
First I use and aluminium sheet cut it down to fit the mounting area. Then II a right angle welded to the bottom of it. This right angle will be used to screw it to the tranny tunnel. I added industrial grade Velcro to it.

I then installed Velcro to the back side of the ECU.

The mounting plate was then secured in place by three metal screws on the top that screwed into the transversal steel beam. The bottom part of the mounting plate is secured by two metal screws through the tranny tunnel.

Head on view of the mounting plate and ECU in place. Of course you won't really see this when the new centre console is installed.

holy shit! can i say shit?

there should have been a warning in the title - NSFW, or some warning there would be some graphic details... the third picture.... was not what I was expecting for a ecu re-location!

It has nothing to do with me, but everything with the way welds look like. If its you welding/learning then its ok, but if you're paying someone to practice then thats something else..

Sure it does. I've known you for many years and you are one to criticise all the time.

In any case I know it doesn't look good. The shop I'm using (2 minutes away) is not specialized in small pieces and in "refined" work (they work of heavy machinery) but I needed it fast. The same can be said about the framing of the centre console. In either cases it suites me for now and when I get a permanent centre console made it will be better.

Also keep in mind it's 1/16 of an inch thick aluminium and that is very hard to weld properly without burning through it.

Look, If youre going to be posting every week with something youre doing to your car and then complain if someone has something to say, I dont think you should be posting. This is the internet and people have opinions so no need to take things personally or be an ass about things

Well the complete AC system is coming out so is the secondary air pump system including the valve the vacuum hoses ect. The complete ABS system in being removed including the ABS pump and its controller, the master cylinder is also being removed. I may also remove the water/oil cooler from the car.

I have already relocated the battery to the back and a CF hood is going on. This should save a lot of weight upfront.

In the future the power steering pump may be removed too and replaced by an electric driven pump. I'd also like to find a smaller windshield washer tank.

If you can think of anything else I should remove, please let me know.

How's that for useless junk coming out from under the hood?!

I think you know that I know those welds aren't the prettiest so why bother especially when you know I don't buy or put shit on or in this car.

In any case enough on those shitty welds. :-)

As for its weight I'm not sure yet. It weighed 2979 lbs prior to the cage going in but lots of things have still to come out. I would like to target about 2800 lbs once all finished.

Yes I know but it all depends from whom and how the criticism comes across.

I'm up for any constructive criticisms but not just criticisms for the sake of it especially from guys that have been around these forums for as long as I have and know me and my car.

I'm not grilling him, just telling him that those welds look like rubbish and in no way I would accept that and pay for it.

he can take it any way he wants but that ain't gonna make those welds look any cleaner.

I agree 100% but for now it will have to do. Not this weekend put the next one I have a track date and I need to get some mechanical work done to the car first. This dash/electrical thing is taking way too much time.
