    Unhappy killed a tranny today!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
well, some of you may know, i am a tranny tech.. been doing foreign transmissions for a few years now, well today i was re-installing a 2004 A6 quattro transmission. no big deal, done this like at least 75 times in the last 4 years.... somehow i got distracted and i forgot to put gear oil in the differential... took the car out for my normal 30 mile test drive upon completion... made it about 2 miles from the shop and it locked up the front wheels... made me feel pretty good about myself considering i have done this like what feels like a gazillion times...

so i am mainly posting this as a warning, check your diff fluid, and replace it if you disassemble your tranny, don't be a tard like me... as you can see, with no lube it didn't make it far.

i know most of you probably dont care, but i needed to talk about it, its beating me up inside..

I usually stick to killing hookers, but I suppose you can fit tranny's in the trunk just fine too. Probably not as many though.

guess I misunderstood. If I travel to western PA, I'll make sure to leave the dress at home.

    Re: killed a tranny today!

you dont understand how dumb it makes me feel, i have done so many of these transmissions.... and somehow today i just blanked on the diff.. i guess its good that i actually care that i fucked up, cause i know some mech's that are just like "fuck it, aint my car" but i cant work like that, i usually double check everything, but it was a rushed job and i fucked it up, i guess it pays to work at normal pace and not hurry...

im not really worried about it, im just glad it locked up on me and not the customer, it was a pretty scary situation when your going like 30+mph and the car just basically jams on the brakes... i am just hoping no case damage, but we'll see in the morning when i pull it back out, i will take some pics for you guys of the damage

Eh, what can he do, it already happened and I'm sure the problem is being corrected. All he can do is learn from it and have good laugh later.

Everybody makes mistakes, sometimes we just need to be humbled a little.

My first project on my audi was to put in a new DV, I went through the whole install process being very careful the whole time. After the belly pan was back on I walked over to my workbench and the new DV was laying there nice as you please. The second install was quicker, despite the grumbling.

Thanks for sharing, makes me feel better somehow.

Remind me to never come to your shop for any work.

Just kidding meng. Like everyone said, shit happens. I fix things for a living too and at some point you WILL make a mistake regardless of how good you are at what you do. Just learn from it and don't make the same mistakes again.

Isn't the center diff fluid the same as the transmission itself? In otherwords, the filler is the same as the filler for the trans (above the driver side front driveshaft)?

automatic tranny, fill tranny fluid thru bottom of pan, and front diff thru port on passenger side diff housing, and center and rear is thru port in rear....

Oh, I misread that it was an A6 and automatic. Gotcha.

Don't feel too bad. When I was a Land Rover tech (for about a year), I was working a Saturday trying to catch up from my fucked up Friday before on a rear main seal on a Series II Disco. Like you, I've done this plenty of times but this particular job was a pain in the ass from the start. Anyways after I button everything up and cleaning the top of my box off to get ready for a test drive, I noticed that there was a brand new Rear Main seal still in the plastic wrapping...

Fortunately the job only cost me the time to do the job twice

we didnt tell the customer about the diff... it happened during the checkout inspection and the car wasnt supposed to be done until today, but i finished it yesterday and killed it.
today i tore it down and installed a new diff and filled it up before i installed the tranny this time and its all good now, the customer has her car back and everything is ok now.....

i am just glad it blew up on me and not her... it cost us about $700 in parts to fix what i did, so it wasnt all that bad... from now on i will be filling the diff's before i install the tranny.. i always d that with the rear, and do the front after its bell'd up, but this time i forgot, so now i have a new plan of attack....
