Why is my oil temp going so high?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I changed my oil a little over a month ago. I used shell full synthetic (5w-30). Noticed my oil temp would get to almost 250 after a few short pulls. So i changed to royal purple 15w-40 last week. But i'm still having the same issue. And this happens even on cool nights when it's not even above 65 degrees. Is something wrong? TIA.

i had similar issue, my would fluctuate up and down all the time and even go to the max temp. I replaced my Oil Temperature Sensor on the bottom of the Oil Pan and that took care of the problem

Re: Why is my oil temp going so high?

O ok. But mine doesn't fluctuate, it just keeps going higher until i slow down for a bit. It gets to 225 so easily now. Haven't seen temps this high since last summer. Do you think my temp sensor needs to b replaced?

Replace it and see. It's a cheap possible solution.

Ok, guess i'll try replacing it then.

I haven't checked the fans, but i assumed that the engine temp would go up also if the fans weren't working. But i will check those also. Thanks guys, i'll let you know the turnout.

Re: Why is my oil temp going so high?

I had my inner fan go out and saw higher than normal oil temps, but yes the coolant temps rose too. Try the sensor. Also, have you scanned for any possible codes?

Re: Why is my oil temp going so high?

Could it be from the weight of the oil?

He is using 15w40 I thought the car required 0w40

    Just a thought

That heavy weight would make it harder to reach those temp as quick

Re: Why is my oil temp going so high?

They are pretty freakin' sweet man! It's still too hot to really get a feel for the extra power. In FL, it can go from a chilly 55-60 degrees to a blazing 80-85 from one day to the next. It really seemed like the day before I got them installed it was nice and chilly and the day after and every day since it's been hot. I will say this though, the damn thing just keeps pulling and pulling all the way to redline. On the stockers, there was a definite wall and drop off. I HIGHLY recommend them!!!

No, I think I got the last set of the old style from Matrix. Apparently I wasn't good enough to get the new style...

Re: Why is my oil temp going so high?

my oil is getting very hot too.. just normal driving with boosting up to 10lbs i will see 225 in half hour after it is warmed up. my initial thought was because i never upgraded my oil lines when i went stage 3 (dumb idea) and because i have an fmic w/ removed fan. however, i am running 0w40 oil, so this summer i will be getting something a little thicker and maybe that will help? i will let you know how it goes.

Jack up the car, remove the plastic belly pan, look at the oil pan and you can't miss it.

Re: Why is my oil temp going so high?

So I wonder, at what level do oil temperatures really become a concern?

As it's heating up here i'll see my S4 (stock) running normally between 90-105C (195-220F) when fully warmed up, even pushing it some. I get the impression these levels are not a problem at all. Never seen it get to 120C (250F) but i'm sure with some pushing it could get there.

As far as the owner's manual is concerned, if temps go into the "higher ranges" let it cool down/take it easy until they ease back into the lower range. If they don't, service time.
