so after much debate i just took the guys word for it and tried out the setup he suggested. i couldnt be happier, it sounds fantastic to me and no drone on the highway at all. the perfect amount of growl and not too raspy. setup is as follows: (cat stayed in) 3"-->2.5" with glasspacks on each-->4" tips heres the only pic i have of it my friend has some more on his camera, ill try to get a sound clip soon.

ill get an in car clip tomorrow and you guys can hear. its weird its loudest point is when your getting on it at like 2500 rpms and it smooths out as the rpms rise.

For me the zone from 2800-3200rpm is the loudest and once I get above that the exhaust is pretty quiet.

props for having the balls to run that setup. I would imagine it sounds like an SRT4 with strait pipes, which means raspy loud exhaust with drone. But apparently you say it's pretty mild...I'd like to hear the sound clips.

That is where mine is loudest. If loud is an appropriate word for how my exhaust sounds (I think its quiet).

i mean, i can see how it would be too loud and raspy for some people. but i live in the land of crx's with motor swaps that sound like indy cars, so its not too loud for me. the fact that its catback makes a HUGE difference. ive heard louder with a TP and mufflers.

edit: heres a link to AMZE's sound clip with TP, its louder than mine. i love the way his car sounds, hope he doesnt mind me using it

I just got my car back and in 3" to dual 2.5" with 2 mufflers, and 2 resonators. I have a bad 3k drone. I'm going try to find some round baffled mufflers or just put in 2 more long resonators. I have a baby on the way and can't have much drone. Him having the cat still is the reason for no drone.

    Re: custom exhaust installed!

yeah, youll see from the in car footage when i get it.. almost no drone at all between 65 and 70 mph. im just getting the supporting mods going so i can do a rebuild and go BT in the future (my avant wants to be like dougyfresh's when it grows up) of course when that happens ill take the cat out and get mufflers. if i took the cat out now with this setup it would be ridiculous.

Well I complained about the drone and then the mod gods decided to give me a wonderful rattle to listen to in order to distract me from it.

You know what I found out to have caused that rattle... so I no longer complain about the drone.

Let me know what you figure out. I run a HFC and I'm don't even think I get the rear mufflers hot enough to even have them start breaking in yet.

When I have some free time I'm considering putting a bunch of Dynamat over under the rear seats and spare tire area to see if that will help deaden the sound.

i want a sound clip. i had 3"-2.5" straight pipes back to two magnaflows and it sounded like asshole. of course i didnt have a cat though. i went back and got it changed. had 2 resonators put in and change the magnaflows to the street series mufflers and it was still a bit loud, but much much better.

I wont, I tried that with the magnaflow system I had on my 1.8t GTI and it really didnt do jack to block out sound. I even coated the exhaust channel with firewall sound deadener as well. Nothing. You may have to use the thicker stuff like luxury liner from second skin.

    Re: custom exhaust installed!

ive got one audible sound clip on my friends video camera, i cant get it to work with my laptop and hes been super busy. i felt bad bothering him about it so i havent gotten it uploaded yet. also, things have already changed... while i liked the sound of the setup in the pic, i actually wanted the gains of removing the cat so i ordered a test pipe and had some magnaflows installed. the test pipe should be here in the next couple days so i will get sound clips of both up i promise.

p.s. when is the possible tour of trinidad?

    Hey All,

I'm a noob and had a Thermal exhaust installed (bought it off a local Audi guy here in Costa Mesa, CA). I like the exhaust but find it's too loud (drone) at 3000 rpms.

Any solution other than getting a quieter exhaust? Can I add an additional resonator?

What other systems are quieter? (i.e. Flowmaster? Remus? etc.)

    THanks,
    JJ

I agree, I hope the AWE that i'm getting is not going to sound like this... It sounds like there is just a hole in the muffler.

God I hate these thugs. The Audi is flawless as it is.

Thugs?? whatever dude, to each his own. and like i said, after a couple of days, i ended up changing it anyways.. setup is now, VMR testpipe, to 3" downpipe, to 2.5" after the "Y", with magnaflow 14851's. if this is "thug" to you, than i guess there are tons of "thugs" because its a pretty common setup. also, if you think that a stock audi exhaust is "flawless" you my friend are insane!

I just on thermal exhaust, bought used from fellow audiziner.
Must say it is loud, but has nice tone to it. Makes it sounds like I have two extra cylinders
