DIY white LED gauges on prefacelift cluster

    ...well, the 97 at least.

I was asked for a write up, its pretty straight forward but here goes.

Use this write up to remove the cluster:

    http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int40.shtml

Once its out, use a small torx to remove the 4 bolts holding the 3 pieces of the cluster together; circuit board, rear panel, clear front panel.

This is what you should have:

Remove each needle and each gauge face, be careful, and note where the needle falls on the face before you remove it or things like your engine temp. wont be accurate.

This is the rear of the speedo, you need to sand of all the red that covers any part of the gauge you do not want red. Ensure to NOT sand the warning light backings:

After sanding with 180 grit for a few minutes, you will probably want to mask the front of the face in order to protect it:

Order 10 of these bulbs from superbrightleds.com, you need the 8.5D's.

Put everything back the way you found it, and you should have this:

NOTE: the bulbs are polarized, so if they dont work at first, turn them 180*

Why are the needles so dull on your gas, temp, and clock?

How bright is it at night? Is it in your face bright? Or is it like oem facelift.

it retains the dimming feature. at full intensity it is fairly bright, but any less it is more than fine. i keep it abotu half way, it is at full intensity in those pics.

Re: DIY white LED gauges on prefacelift cluster

Well I just opened up my 1998 cluster, the backing isn't red. I guess it was only 96 and 97 that had the red filter. 98 / 99 has red LED's. Boo, I was looking forward to this, bought sandpaper and all.

Re: DIY white LED gauges on prefacelift cluster

very cool mod - Can't believe it came out so clean!

I actually like my red cluster - something most cars do not have. But I can see if someone wanted all white light gauges for boost/afr/oil pressure, this would be a must! good job...
