typically a bad CP would make your car sound like a subbie. you loose power, and the jerks a lot.
this isnt' exactly the same, but similar. and i wouldn't hurt to go though a similar diad on your car.
my brother has a 1.8t. its good till about 3200-3400, where it just totally loses all power, then its fine again above 3400. he checked all the vac lines, there were a few lil tears. replaced that it got a lil better. CPs checked out. new plugs, still there. new n75, a lot better, but still there. cleaned the maf, better, but still there.
turns out. it was the fuel filter. the slightly odd part, the car was fine, then would dump fuel in at 3200rpm, thus running way rich. then lean back to normal after 3400. the fuel filter was absolutely filled with sand and dirt. about 45K on the fuel filter. the tech said "its like I just dumped out 1/2 the Sahara out of your filter" supposedly its fine now. brother picks the car back up tomorrow. no more safeway gas for him. his first filter at 55K was spotless when removed. and this time it was full of sand and dirt. : (
