It's all good man, here's a little walk through:

Click search and click advanced search. Type in your keyword, for example I used "fmic or smic" and selected TITLES only. And lastly I click on the B5 S4/RS4 to narrow it down to just this forum section.

i disagree. if done properly, you can make the FMIC look better than any SMIC.

that being said, the better question should be which one performs better!?!
the answer for that is up to debate. personally, iv tested them all- even different FMIC's. essentially anything is better than stock, and they both do the same thing. so i opted for the FMIC as its a good bang for the buck!
good for 15-30 hp depending on the setup. even though they are cheaper and perform same/better/worse, they are made in china- so quality control aint the best. also, it takes a lil more work as youll have to cut the bumper rebar.

that is all.

just keep in mind the FMIC requires removal of ac fan, relocating the PS cooler, cutting the bumper support. the FMIC does get more air flow since its in the front, but at the cost of blocking airflow to the radiator.

the FMIC dont poorly looks ricey, but if you spend some more time on it, its possible to make it look clean.

ebay FMIC core is $120 shipped ... pretty hard to beat

also, FMIC has the best performance in terms of IAT. there is more pressure drop im sure, but no data on that

thats what i did, probably half assed but still watch out! i was driving and it got shook loose. it started dragging on the ground and wore a hole in line. nearly broke my ps pump by running it dry, but in the end i got a nice cheap fluid cooler that works alot better and relocated it on top of my fmic.

Valid point. But mine is wedged in there pretty good. Mine is sitting on my AC fan bolt, so it shouldn't fall. *Crosses fingers.*

Personally not a fan of FMIC without any of the bottom grills. That silver one is very well done though. And my definition of ricey isn't limited to parts that look fast that don't go, rather also includes diy parts that look poorly assembled and other parts commonly seen on ricey JDM cars (lots of ugly front mounts with all hoses visible there).

I've learned the hard way,i bought a Ebay Frontmount and hacked my bumper to hell. i liked it for awhile but now i see i want a cleaner looking S. still will have a frount mount but a different design that still looks nice.
In the end i spent less than 350.00 total on my setup, so if i want to change it i can... no lost, and the bumper $hit i didn't pay for it anyway.
I say experiment if you don't like it change later.

Just remember ERs require bumper modification AWE SMICs do not...

Our Dual Side Mount Intercooler (DSMIC) upgrade requires no modifications to the bumper or fenders. Belly pan fits with no modifications. Can be used with cars running air conditioning.

Oh and the minor trimming you ARE talking about, which is NOT the bumper; to install AWE SMICS you have to do the same.

First off, this is about a ricer "look" not ricer performance. There is a difference between the two.

Bullshit. I had AWE sidemounts before i went fmic. Who gives a fuck about the "look." Hell, I hacked the shit out of my bumper and I could care less. It's a turbo car, and SMIC owners just are afraid to hack up the precious audi s4. A front mounted intercooler performs better on any turbo car. S4's aren't any special magical car where side mount intercoolers are better. Yes, the pipes stick out on my car as well, and I would prefer they didn't, but they're not as bad as others I've seen. I'm actually debating smaller piping and coating the pipes black as I've seen in person on deb38's car which looked real good. This is as far as I'd go as far as "looks" are concerned, which I couldn't give two shits about.. as long as the intercooler performs better than my AWE sidemounts (which it noticeably does) then I couldn't be happier.
