Want one, been looking for one for months but way out of my price range. I would like to use it for MTBikes and ski's, but i was wondering, i've seen a few on sale here for other models, would they fit?? Plus i think they look super cool/.

I need a set too before I go on vacation end of may, I'll just use mine for bikes and for looks :) It'll have to fit an adult size mountain bike, or my kids bikes at times...

Andrey: how do you like trhe Audi ones? How much were they?

Are the Yakimas just as nice? cheaper maybe? what's the best place to get them?

    Re: Roof racks!

I have a yakima set-up on my S6. I have Lowrider towers, 48" cross bars and 2 Yak bike racks and wind deflector. I forgot what the racks are called. (the kind where you remove the front tire and leave the rear) The whole set-up was a little over $700. For winter, I will have to drop another $200 for Yak Fat Cats. It looks awesome and all everything fits very well. The locks also lock the fork to the rack and the towers/bars to the roof rails.

    Re: Roof racks!

I meant Fat Cat 6's. They can fit 6 pairs of skis or 4 boards. http://www.yakima.com/racks/ski-rack.../fatcat-6.aspx
They also lock, using the same removeable locks used on the bike rack.
The bike racks are called Sprocket Rockets.
    http://www.yakima.com/racks/bike-rac...ketrocket.aspx

I'll try to get some better pics in a day or 2. I have the wind deflector on, and I moved the towers farther apart, so the bike rack doesn't stick up in the air. I am also going to trim the excess bar off the outsides of the towers, so streamline it a bit. I don't like bars that stick out. I'm not mouting anything outside the towers.

    Re: Roof racks!

    Guys,

There was a thread in the Avants forums a while ago that has a lot of good information:

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ight=roof+rack

In my view you really want to look at what you are getting if you know that you will be using it quite often. If you are a once a month rider of bikes, or Skis kind of guy then it doesn't matter much what you get. Or guide yourself based on price /looks, whatever...
Now if you are a serious outdoor kind of guy and the words "road trip" make you forget who you are and everything else in your life, then you might want to look into it a little further in detail.

For my money one of the best places to get a roof rack is REI. www.REI.com If you have one in your area chances are that you will find there all of the advice, accesories, and maybe even help installing it on your car. They are not the cheapest, but they are the best...

There is nothing sexier than an Avant with the perfect rack on top, filled with Bikes, cool gear and goodies calling you to ditch your everyday life to take her for a ride...

That's what life is all about...!

    Re: Roof racks!

I have used Yakima for a long time. Skis in the winter, bikes and kayaks in the summer and rocket box anytime of year. Why buy a model specific rack when something else is better? The rack I bought for our outback transfered perfectly to our A6 Avant and will be easily transferable to what ever we buy next. So what ever price I paid for it just dropped in half since it carried on to our current ride.

I have carried lumber, raft frames, logs for firewood when camping, ladders, you name it and it has been on the roof!

    Re: Roof racks!

Oh, yeah. That's another thing about the Yak rack. There is no metal in contact with my roof or my rails. There are rubber skirts on the part where the towers sit on the rails.

And I would be lying if I said that the looks of the Yakima rack didn't figure into my decision to get one. The Thule rack was not as clean looking, and I didn't want an older, anorexic-looking rack on my wagon. The Yak rack is pretty beefy. Someone would really have to work to steal it or the bikes off of it.

LOL!!! Yeah Cycling is really my first love and I geek out as much with Titanium bike parts as I do about car stuff. I love racing in general, but I like it better when the engine is me so I am trying to figure out how to inbed twin RS6 K04s in my chest so I can kick some ass out there. What's funny is that some of the wheelsets for Bicycles I own cost more than many of the wheelsets we buy for our cars...

An interesting fact is that Audi has always being a great sponsor for Cycling in general, in fact the first RS6 Avant I ever saw was a team Van for a cyling team in Germany...

    Re: Roof racks!

haha, I love the look of Kiev's A6 with that bike rack. When I see his exhaust vids on youtube I feel like the car looks shorter w/ the rack. I have always thought the a6 was just a bit to long.

Sport Rack makes some decont racks for a really reasonable price too. They're pretty universal, but fit well on my A6. This is my bike rack, and also have a snowboard attachment too.

    that's well built hardtail.
    I miss my HT!
I have roofrack also, I really don't like having the front bar right across the sunroof.
so much noise w/sunroof open, and even when closed, still makes noise.
wrapping it with bungee cord or wind deflector breaks the stream makes it some what better but still very annoying.

the trunk rack works on any shape. You can adjust it however you want.
but I wouldn't recommend trunk rack cause it scratches paint pretty bad.
especially if the bike is heavy...like DH bikes...
