    A bit of a problem.

Well, As some of you may remember, I just recently got my Audi. I had to take a road trip down to tampa to drop something off for a good buddy and do some things for work. Anyways, about a 200 some odd mile drive.

Keep in mind, I have a bearing bad in my rear end which causes vibrations at anything under 45mph. So I left Jacksonville, about 40 miles in, I am making good time on the highway, about 85, 90. I hear a loud thump coming from the rear, im thinking, wtf? then another loud thump. So I slowed down a little, and it stopped. I kept on rolling.

At the time I thought the rear end just went out and Id still make it with FWD. Well I kept going for another 60 or so miles with no more problems. I pull off to a Travel place to use their free wifi to make sure I made the correct turn. I did so I went to go get back on the intertate, I merged and punched it and it bogged down and finally got up to speed. It felt like the motor was working very hard to get me back up to speed. So another 100 miles or so I stop again, get something to drink hop back in the car and take off, same thing, expect this time I notice that it never changed gears. Ive lost everything besides OD/5th gear. I pull off, manually put it in 2nd gear, and try to go, nothing, completely locked up, all gears besides 5th.

At this time I thought id make it because its all intertate and I didnt need anything else other than 5th. So I get about 10miles from the guys house, and it starts pulsing out of no where, I call him and tell him that Im not going to make it and Id call him when it dies. So I get about a mile from his, make a right hand turn and smell stuff burning, I look behind me and all I see is white smoke, tranny fluid. So I pull off and see a trail of fluid all the way up to my car. Now I know that on Audis the tranny fluid is sealed off so I couldnt add fluid if I wanted to.

Now I want to know what are the odds that my tranny is gone? My buddys dad owns Volkstech and thinks a hose broke and its just out of fluid but I think its roasted. If it is indeed gone, is there anyway to swap a manual tranny in there? What all would it take?

Why would you take a 200 mile drive knowing you had a bad bearing is my question.

Well the bearing didnt hurt anything, just made a shit ton of noise. I had my buddys VW/Audi shop look at it and they said itll just be annoying and wont damage anything.

I'd say 100% but that's only based on your retarded story.

Sorry - I wish I had something nicer to say, but to tell a story about how fucked your car is and how you kept on pushing it and then wonder if you are screwed seems a little ridiculous.

Re: A bit of a problem.

The bearing had nothing to do with it.

Sounds like you had some bad luck. No way to know what to do next until it gets looked at and evaluated.

My car has 113k miles on it and I bought it with a slightly bad front passenger side bearing at 107k. Still have not replaced it.

Not bragging, but just saying that (wheel bearing) was not the culprit.

I'm with Militant Grunt and ct1.8t4me, the OP seemed to keep pushing his car. One bump, then a second bump, the no power, then it wouldn't change gears, then it starts pulsing, then white smoke and finally tranny fluid.

I have no advice, it does sound like you're in for an expensive repair. Good luck.

I think the point with the bad bearing is, that it's still a bad idea to drive on it. They do get worse and more expensive. Depending how long he drove on it before, he could end up replacing the hub. I probably wouldn't have driven 200miles (400 round trip?) with a bad wheel bearing.. but on top of that he seemed to keep pushing his car. One bump, then a second bump, the no power, then it wouldn't change gears, then it starts pulsing, then white smoke and finally tranny fluid.

I have no advice, but I do wish you the best of luck. Let us know what happened.
FWIW my mechanic (no, not the stealership. enthusiest himself whom only does euro cars) said that mine's not that bad which needs immediate attention, but will need replacement sooner or later. This was maybe 3-4 weeks ago.

Re: A bit of a problem.

I edited my post above because talking about the bearing would get this thread off track and not help the OP.

It was another 130miles before I had to stop at that point I had realized what had happened.

Re: A bit of a problem.

    it's FUBAR.
Once you lose that much fluid out of an automatic, you need to replace it. It would cost more to competely overhaul it than it would to replace it w/ either a reman or a low mile used one.

Sorry about your luck, maybe it could've been saved if you'd stopped and had it looked at when it first messed up.

sounds like you ruined your diff and transmission.

The diff is fine. A used grade A transmission is 850 bucks. Some of my buddys at Volkstech think its just out of fluid. But I think the whole thing is FUBAR'd... I wonder if the old tranny would make a nice table?

I doubt it. They're not real pretty.

I personally wouldn't waste my time trying to fix the messed up trans. Other than your one buddy who thinks it's out of fluid, anybody with experience will tell you it's toast.
Granted I haven't worked in the Auto Service industry for as long as some others on this site, but I've never seen, nor heard of a trand coming back after that type of incident.

I don't see how the Diff is in question. In a Tiptr. car it's still part of the tranny right?

My buddy owns one of the best VW/Audi places in Jacksonville and at one point had 4 shops running.
