99.0 1.8T using oil? Where does it go?

I have noticed that over the last few months, I seem to be using oil. I have always installed Mobil 1, and never had any engine issues. There is about 88,000 miles on the car.

Today when I changed the oil, it was probably 2 quarts down (or at least it seemed, e.g. it wasn't registering on the dipstick). The oil light was NOT on. I didn't see any leaks, nor have I noticed anything on the driveway. I don't see black or gray smoke coming out the exhaust, and last week I passed the California smog check without a problem.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

You should do a leak down check. Worn piston rings could cause a higher oil consumption. Another thing to look into is having your valve stem seals replaced.

wouldn't be a bad idea either to check the compressor housing/turbo seal. If you remove the TIP and wipe your finger inside the compressor and it comes out clean, you're good to go. Otherwise you can just pull off the boost hose to the cross tube(under the radiator) and see if it's damp with oil through there. It's the lowest point in the boost system and if it'll build up any where it'll be there.

Re: 99.0 1.8T using oil? Where does it go?

Let your car idle for 15minutes. If your exhaust starts smoking like a diesel, your turbo seals are shot. My car didn't smoke or stink until it idles for an extensive period of time. Changed my turbo at 215k and oil consumption / smoking stopped. Oil's too expensive to burn anymore.
my old A4 1.8t---226k hard redlined miles -8000 mi oil changes. Chipped for 150,000 miles. Still going.
