04 S4 Does anyone else have this problem? It doesn't happen all the time. Sounds like its low on pwr steering fluid but checked and it was full, and it only does it when you turn the wheel while braking, parking etc..

Re: Steering noise when turning while braking?

I notice a low groaning noise when doing tight turns but usually only under a little bit power, not under braking. I think this has to do with the inside tires being spun faster by the drivetrain than they should be in tight circumference turns, causing them to loose traction a little bit.

Are you sure you hear this sound under braking? If you try to replicate this sound with the clutch in/out of gear, do you still hear the noise?

    Dude,
You have got to bring to the audi shop. This was a recall. I had an issue like this and it was a steering system problem.

Any information on the recall bulletin ID? What exactly needed to be changed?

i had a noise similar to this and the problem was my power steering pump was slowly chewing itself up and messed up the seals in my steering rack.. check your fluid for metal shavings i didnt notice mine till my pump was completely gone and the bill was over 4 grand

Yes. i believe it was the steering pump. You have got to bring your car in the shop.

If the noise was the steering pump, you would notice the sound the most when the car sitting stationary and turning the wheel from lock to lock. The power steering pump has to work the hardest when the car's not moving.

I think it's the AWD system as well, where the diffs are not allowing the inside wheels to turn slowly enough to compensate for the turning radius.

Re: Steering noise when turning while braking?

So if it is the AWD system - is that normal or a problem? I hear it everyday at very slow speed, with the wheels turned slighty to the right, pulling into a slightly upgrade parking space.

Lets just put it this way. Ive owned 3 quattros, and they all do that. Is it when you turn left AND right into tight parking spots, or make U turns of some sort?

That's been my experience as well. To test this, find a parking lot, crank the wheel all the way over to one direction. Start driving smoothly, give it a little gas and once you get to about 70% of the maximum grip, give it a little more. You'll probably hear some low groaning from the inside tires if it's the same issue I'm familiar with.

Re: Steering noise when turning while braking?

my brakes would grind when i was turning into a parking spot and applying the brakes. this was when i only had 500 miles on it. There was a recall on the front calipers...i think they told me that the bladder inside went bad? something like that but there was a recall and it is now fixed. so check into it.

All Quattro's do this. just don't do a full right/left lock. When you get to full lock, let off a little.

Re: Steering noise when turning while braking?

I had an issue where is sounded like squeeky brakes when I would make a sharp turn into a parking stall. Audi could not repro at first and then found it. They replaced my caliper seals I think.....I forget specifically but they said they weren't retracting all the way when coming off the brakes. Have not heard the noise again since. Not sure if this is what the others are refering to in terms of noise and the caliper issue...

Re: Steering noise when turning while braking?

My S4 makes the same sound, kind of a rumble when turning sharp at slow speeds, like in a parking lot. It sounds like limited slip differential clutch chatter. Different gear lube?

I just had mine checked out by Jose at Eurotech, it's not a steering pump issue. He checked everything associated with the steering, and she was fine.

It's quite simple. TORSEN is Torque Sensing. No deceleration, no acceleration, no binding. Maintenance throttle is the key, or just live with the binding. Completely normal.

Re: Steering noise when turning while braking?

its not on U-turns or locking the steering wheel. Its very slow speeds.....usually backing out of a driveway or pulling into a parking spot. maybe 8mph or less. Steering wheel is slightly turned....1/2 turn or so and brakes being applied ever so slightly.

Happens to me maybe once a week or so. First I thought it was my power steering pump. Checked and the fluid was a bit low so I added.....Went away for a bit and still doing it. Took it to the dealer and they told me I was rubbing the inner fender liner a bit so they adjusted it and it went away for maybe a month and a half.....now its back again.

Its not a huge deal but can get annoying if someone is in the car. It sounds like a boat-horn...very low grunt. Almost as I just washed my car and stopped with wet rotors. But this isnt the case.....I dunno....I swear its the steering pump or something related to the rack but I cant prove it....and it doesnt happen that often to duplicate it.

ITS NOT the normal noise you hear from the AWD system on U-turns
