This problem has been bugging me - very serious

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I've had my car for 2 years - LAte model 03 A4 1.8t with 30k miles now

and everything's file (minus a bit of cosmetic exterior damage) except for this

whenever I have the car in drive and i hold the brakes, the car shakes a bit (small vibration) - same with S or reverse ...

if I don't warm up the car and just get up and drive, that vibration is way worse (b/c its the added vibration from the pulley in the front by the radiator ...)

anyone know / can guess wtf is causing this/ i'm about to sell the car cuz its annoying as shit

Can you post up pics or a video link of the pulley?

So when you hold the brake while the car is not moving at all you get this issue?

Or when you hold the brake when the car is moving and you get the vib?

Re: This problem has been bugging me - very serious

When I hold the brake and car aint moving I get vibration worse

when it's driving its less noticeable but its still there (i can tell b/c i look back at my rear window through the rear view mirror and the lines get a bit blurry)

basically when the tranny is in anything but park or neutral the shit's vibrating like a dildo

I posted pics of teh pulley a while ago - ill see if I can find it

but the pulley is right behind / by the radiator and when car starts up the thing clacks like no other up an ddown - 40 seconds later it stops ....

    So here's a run down

    1) Car starts and is warming up - it vibrates AND is loud as shit cuz of that pulley

    2) Pulley stops car just vibrates minorly

I'd like to get the vibrating to stop - and the noise too but I've taken it to the dealer 3 times before my warranty expired and they didn't do jack ... I also have audo pure platinume xtended warranty and they said itst fine ....

If this is just example of wear and tear then im selling or junking the car - pisses me off too much

jeez I have no idea on a tip. Maybe it might be worn out mounts?

See I thought about that ... maybe its the mounts but if its mounts, putting the car in neutral or park shouldn't make it stop right?

Sounds like the belt tens. is shot. 30k is to early for the mounts to be bad unless you're heavily modded.

The belt tensioner is the little clickity thing in the front -

    1) how do I know its shot? how do I test
    2) how much will this run me? My pops is an engineer but I'm not very mechanically inclined but if its simple i can probably do it
    3) What about the vibrations? i dun think that tensioner has anything to do with it

Well they just said that the vibration is normal ... i'm pretty sure its not tho

i mean its not like that sever but its noticeable :/

i'd say 1-2mm displacement in terms of how severe the vibration is

Yeah - pretty much -if u wanna get a girl off just make her stick my shift knob in her and put the car in drive hahah

anyway - i took picture of the tensioner but the engine's still hot so the tensioner's fine - gotta wait for the engine to be cold to show u really what goes on with the tensioner (it stops moving after 40 seconds)

hey, can you clarify your concerns... it sounds like 2 separate issues.

The pulley noise is loud and goes away after 40 seconds?
are you sure it is a pulley? your secondary air pump is on for 40 sec....
really loud if it is damaged, or dying.
can you make the pulley noise come back by turning your a/c on?

the vibration: does it happen @ idle in park ? IF only when under load D/S/R
you may have a small vacuum leak.

Re: This problem has been bugging me - very serious

    1) It is the pulley cuz I turn on the car and watch that stupid ass pulley clickily clack away and when it stops noise is gone

    A/C on doesn't change anything

    2) The car vibrates in generation but its especially noticeable when you put the car in drive and stomp on brakes otherwise vibration gets thrown in with road feel etc.

Also 1 of my rims might be bent causing road vibration so the best way to see this is in drive with brakes on

car does not vibrate in park or neutral (obviously)

So what are the possible problems for 2) and is it normal for the pulley to clickilty clack like tha tfor 40 seconds? I figured if its broke it'd make that noise constantly

Did a search - apparently this is normal with an auto transmission? WTF ... all auto trainnies on audies will have tremors in idle when in gear? That sounds pretty screwy for a car of thsi quality

I have the same problem. 03 1.8t TIP. all my mounts are new. when i cold start my car it vibrates a little and then when the secondary air pump kicks on, it vibrates like crazy. I did lessen the initial vibration before the pump kicks on by upgrading to NGK laser platinum plugs. 10 bucks each. Ive tried shaving down my snub mount but didnt really change anything. I might try going back to a stock snub just to see if that changes anything. Any body have any other ideas? Im thinking of replacing all of my check valves next. It never vibrated like this when I bought the car 2 years ago.

ya mine vibrates noticeably when its cold, especially when the engine isnt up to operating temp. mine behaves very bizarre though, when im in D or Tip and im stopped/at idle the car will have different stages of vibration (related to changes in the vacuum). when i first stop the idle will be around 17 inches vacuum, then after a few seconds it will drop to 18 or 19 inches and the vibration gets worse. if im at idle for a while (like at a long stop light) the idle will go from 17 -> 18/19 and then back to 17 inches of vacuum and the vibrations will get worse and then better. when im in park i idle at 21-22 inches of vacuum with almost no noticeable vibrations. i dont know what the fuck is going on, maybe a vacuum leak somewhere. i need to change my VCG and cam tensioner gasket in the next week or so, when i do those i think im going to try and do a leak test. its annoying though.

i've heard aftermarket snub mounts on a Tip auto are basically worthless and cause worse vibrations. dont know why, just what i have read on these forums in the past.
Thanks for the EFF shack. -Dirty Mike and the Boyz
