Have your oil tested and go from there. I wouldn't trust the Audi Mechanics.

Possibly VCG (valve cover gaskets)? Supposed common problem on the B6s.

I just had mine replaced, had oil all over the lower part of the engine/exhaust manifold and had no oil light at all nor was the oil level low. I'd think that if they looked at it and didn't notice any oil leakage there it probably wouldn't be the valve cover gaskets

    Re: oil consumption problem

To all the new S4 owners. Rule one! Drain your oil when you purchase your car and put the good stuff in. It doesn't matter when the previous owner said that the oil was changed, drain it and refill it. This way you'll know what oil is in the car, how much went in and how much you are actually using.

I would put some good German oil or Motul or something along those lies in the car. If you use Mobil 1 0/40 euro spec, expect to see your oil burning. It's good oil but thin, you'll burn through a lot of it. I would also do 3k mile oil changes for a little while. This may help with future oil burning issues.

Also, don't overfill the reservoir. Up to the middle of the metal between the plastics are good enough. The audi dealer told me this on my brand new car.

It was changed 3 days ago.. i got the cam adjuster fixed, and had an oil change done.. i think the compression test came out 125 on one bank and 110 on the other.. could that be the problem? HOW SO with 18k?

    Re: oil consumption problem

What oil are you running? Since you had work done to the car I am assuming that they put n the Castrol syntec. Maybe a differnt oil will help with the problem.

    Re: oil consumption problem

I've seen rare instances of excessive oil consumption. It usually goes like this:
customer says oil was low and adds oil.. comes in and oil is @ or near proper level.
    'cause they filled it
can't verify concern..... so I'd tell 'em not to fill it, document level and mark drain plug.
if they are back in 100 to 400miles (Ballpark) with low oil then there is a verified concern.
That is the most important first step. Verification. Next step is oil consumption test and repair. But if they are flying in an engineer he can authorize a repair on the spot if he finds the problem. If not then they will do the test, drive it and check. If low a repair will be performed. The "policy and procedure" takes a little time. Update when you find out the engineers verdict.

Actually the shop put some regular oil (Kendall) or something.. just to see if it has any oil use, since regular burns quicker than syntec.

They did this because on my drive from where I picked up the car (NY to IN), i burnt 3 qts of oil (but i also had cam issues, and a miss in the motor, and no power) The shop fixed that issue, and wanted to see if it still used oil. I was supposed to go back in 3 days for a proper syntec oil change.

Now my question to you is, since the valve cover WAS open to do the cam job, i do smell a little oil when i pop the hood, but thats probably from the Valve cover gaskets leaking onto the exhaust, bc the mech probly didnt tighten right or whatever it may be. But that should not lead to 1 qt being used after a 100 mile drive..

I drive the car hard, but see no black smoke, even when i start it.. i do however see the exhaust tips turn sooty black within 10 miles.. i wipe them clean and theyre black again. so idk.. how can the car be burning so much oil withouth smoke?

I think that everyones tip are sooty black. If they are going to switch out your oil, have them put in the Lubro Moly.
