My A4 just got rear ended this morning, pics of course…

So one of my good friends calls me this morning and tells me how he got wasted in the city last night, had to take a cab home and leave his car parked in Boston over night. He was worried that it might get or already be towed and asked me as a favor if I would drive him in to get it and said he would give me gas money for doing so, I agreed as he has pulled plenty of favors for me before, that’s what friends are for right? So what do I get in return for doing a friend a favor, I get my poor Audi rear ended by a god damn BMW 328!

I was about to parallel park, so I throw my hazards on and right as I start to look back to make sure no one is up my ass, I get slammed into, I didn’t even hear squealing tires, I don’t even think the kid was looking or paying attention to what was in front of him. I got out and I looked at my car and his, and I could not even really get mad at the kid, he just kept saying how sorry he was and the damage to both cars was about equal, although he may have gotten it worse because his hood got damaged as well as his front bumper of course. Not only that the 328 looked brand new, and based on the insurance papers he gave me, it looked like he just got the thing. If an old 92 Honda had hit me I prob would have flipped out, but I stayed totally calm, I rear ended someone myself last year, so I know how shitty it feels, I think it was his first accident, he seemed very nervous and shaken, which is understandable.

Anyway here are some pictures of the damage, they suck because it is raining out. It is not too bad, but both the lower and upper bumper will have to be replaced, the lower part is all fucked up, the upper is scratched up and has dimples in it, it seems like it got crushed in, then popped back out. My main worry is my exhaust, it looks like my muffler is hanging lower, but I think that is just because the bumper cover for pushed in and up, making the cut out higher, so it just looks that way, there appears to be no damage to the exhaust, hangers look fine and not a scratch on the muffler itself, but if it is damaged, I am not sure how insurance handles that, esp. since the muffler is aftermarket. I sure it is not a big deal, might just need a new hanger or two, It makes me car look ricer though, like a bad exhaust install, I am embarrassed to drive it right now, which sucks.

But I guess it not all that bad right? I was not at fault, so I should not have to pay anything, nor should my insurance go up and maybe I can even get an aftermarket bumper out of it somehow, has anyone done this? Anyway sorry for the long rant, one to the pictures…

eh, very minor damage...but it was an unpainted stock bumper.

use it as an excuse to swap, or in the least, paint your lowers.

At least the damage isn't THAT bad and no one was hurt.

Hopefully you can score an S4 or USP rear bumper upgrade out of this!
If you find someone shady enough... I bet you could get all your lowers painted also!

Sorry to hear! I was rear-ended back in December during that big snow storm when every one left at 1pm to go home. It took me 6 hours what would normally take 30 minutes. The last mile to my house, woman coming up behind me going way too fast (I was already stopped). Couldn't stop obviously with all the snow and ice on the ground and plowed into me. Car was dropped off to the body shop last week and is getting a new S4 rear put on She was at fault so her insurance company is covering everything including my rental car.

It sucked that day because the rear bumper was just repaired 2 months prior, pretty much brand new. I was a little mad at the woman because she was going way too fast for the conditions. I just wanted to get home after spending 6 hours in the car. Should be getting my car back next week sometime.

Damn BMW drivers. Last time I was at outside of south station hanging and waiting for my train.
this little BMW cut off a big truck, guess what, that truck honk its horn to wake up that bitch in the BMW, it also woke up the whole freaking city because that horn was loud. that truck driver was a female as well and she screamed at that BMW's chick.
were you nice and calm when you got out of the car? I wouldnt be really pissed. but this is when you make money!

I'm glad you kept your calm, and both you and the guy are ok. Hopefully this will teach him to pay more attention to the road. I go rear ended too and I was surprise how calm I was cause I'm a freak when it comes to my car. Her liscence frame marked my lower unpainted bumper. =(

The good news is that the damage is minimal. At first I thought those pictures you posted were the "before" shots. I've seen many rear-end collision aftermaths and they can be quite worse. Mod upgrade time!

I would love to somehow get an S4 rear bumper out of this, but how much do they cost? I don't know how to go about making out on stuff like this, and I don't know the owners of any body shops, so if it is possible I would just pay for the S4 bumper myself, then use the money I get to have it painted/installed. But I am not even sure if that would work and not be considered fraud. Again I am a rookie with stuff like this, anyone want to give me some suggestions on how to legally go about getting a new bumper out of this?

If the bumper is damaged enough that it warrants a new one, the body shop will tell the insurance company what it needs. You can work it out with the body shop that you want to order a S4 rear instead of the A4 rear and just pay the difference out of pocket. This is the most common occurance when things like this needs replacement.

Where are you located in MA? I can suggest a shop depending on your location.

The bumper cover may not look too bad- it's only cosmetic anyway-
beware of damage under that cover tho!

Just getting an S4 cover would be sweet, but you might need rebar and the shock absorber bit as well if it's collapsed.

I've seen cars that looked like yours after a wreck get totaled by the insurance co. because the unibody was tweaked out of spec...

S4 rear is basically the same price as the A4 rear bumper. Just make sure you let the guys at the bodyshop know you want one.

The insurance quote will pull up all of the part numbers by your VIN number and will most likely only offer a reconditioned OEM bumper (you may have to come out of pocket $200, worst case scenario.

I am located in Wakefield, MA, if you are not familiar with it's location, it is on the north shore, but right off of route 128 and also close to route 93 as well. I have heard some recommend Anchor auto body in Woburn, MA, but I have not heard of much else.

Yes, Anchor is a highly praised body shop by Audi owners on AW. My car is there right now getting the S4 rear put on. I've never used another body shop. I work directly with one of the guys there and he's a real perfectionist. I highly recommend them.

smitty im sorry to hear this!! i know how it feels man, and it sucks!! im not going to bullshit though, i think that exhaust was bent down from the accident. if you look at the bumper on both sides it looks about level, so thats the only thing that makes sense in my mind. just make sure youre there and you point everything out when the adjuster looks at it. my friend got screwed by an adjuster when he wasnt there.

I took work off and got it appraised today, I made sure to point out the exhaust, we got down and looked at it more and the piping def bent from the accident, the pipe coming from the muffler was pushed forward and it is hitting my sway bar bracket. And also the pipe that goes into the resonator is crushed a little bit, the adjuster took pictures of all of this. The muffler itself looks fine, but he said if it needs to be replaced, even though it is aftermarket I wont have to pay for it. Hopefully all turns out well, I will make another update once I get my check...

He should be ok. You need to be at a complete stop to backup... and he had his blinkers on, etc etc.

Looks like a couple good paint scraps and a displaced muffler, all in all from majority of rear endings this doesn't look so bad.

Well in this case thankfully the other driver was found to be at fault, I got a description of the work to be completed from the claims adjuster in the mail yesterday. They said the total damage is 1,072, but that is of course not set in stone, for example if there is damage under the bumper or the exhaust is worse than it looks.

But it says replace rear bumper cover and only lists the part as costing $354, again this is from the adjustment company, not the body shop so it may mean nothing. They also included my left taillight which is not cracked but is not lining up perfectly anymore and then of course the exhaust fix, which claims I need a new muffler, but I doubt it, it is just the piping that will have to be done.

Nothing is final until the body shop looks at it, but I really want to get an S4 rear out of this, can I just pay the difference in cost out of pocket to the shop? If they are replacing the bumper anyway why not just replace it with an S4 is how I look at it. And this is something they will be able to order in house right? Or is it cheaper to buy it separately from somewhere else? Only problem I see with doing that is the shipping times, I may not get it for a while.

Sweet! I am not sure how much more an S4 rear is going to cost, but honestly I don't care if it is $500 more, I need to get something good out of this haha. I have seen it listed on DTH's site for $650 new so I doubt it will be that much more. Have you done a similar thing at Anchor before? Sounds like as long as I explain what I want to do I will be all set, I just hope the S4 rear does not take twice as long to get it! Also do the exhaust cutouts on the S4 bumper sit lower than the regular rear? In other words would my mufflers have to be re-adjusted too? I am assuming no, and the reason it looks lower it because it comes down lower around the wheels.

It doesn't look that bad and with the unpainted lowers, you can get away with driving it without anyone really telling the difference. I just got rear ended myself. Similar to your case but mine was done by a valet parker. Either he backed into someone or another driver drove into my car. Don't know tho. Didn't notice until the next morning which was a crappy sunday for me!

I know it does not look too bad from these pictures, and honestly the bumper is not that bad, but the exhaust is. It looks horrid, it hangs lower and to the left and is pushed in, it looks like a ghetto muffler install and that is what pisses me off.

I will try to get a few better pictures soon.
