    17 minute oil change

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

I changed my oil and filter this morning. It took me 17 minutes with my larger capacity Pela Pro 14 oil extractor (I sold my smaller one to a friend).

I though I'd share the products I used for those interested…

The extractor is extremely easy to use (make sure the oil is warm, not hot). Just push the correct sized tube (you get three) down the dip-stick hole to the bottom and pump the handle a few times to create a vacuum. The tubes they provide aren’t quite long enough so you’ll have to raise the extractor off the groung a bit by placing it on a box or something. I use a plastic milk crate. While the oil is extracting I replace the oil filter. The filter is located on top of the engine, under the trim cover with the Audi logo, at the rear. You’ll see a black plastic domed cover with a plastic nut molded into the top…the filter is inside.

    Mann HU 835/1 x oil filter, $15.53 ea (pack of 4, $62.12 shipped) http://www.germanfilters.com/2004-au...k-p-55729.html

I also purchased a fuel filter but haven't installed it (I haven’t looked in to where it’s located...anyone done it?).

Something tells me gravity will do a much better job than that pump. How exactly does that get to the bottom of the oil pan?

    Re: 17 minute oil change

Like I've mentioned before, I don't think I'd ever own one of these. They're simple to use, but it's not like oil changes are hard. Also, whenever I'm doing an oil change and underneath my car, I give everything a good look over, brakes, check for leaks, lines, tires, suspension, mounts etc.. so I can catch things before they get serious/expensive or just for the reassurance everything is sound. And while I'm doing all that, my oil is draining until the very last drop. It still only takes me a 30-45 minutes.

Damn good post with great links to lots of things I'm gonna need... but I wouldn't trust that oil pump to get all the oil out.

How much oil did you get out using the extractor?

Does the extractor have markings to show you how much oil has been drained?

I actually hear really good things about the pump. If you need an oil change and only have 17 minutes, I don't think that you can beat it.

I forgot who, but someone did a test which showed the pump getting more oil out then the conventional way.

    Re: 17 minute oil change

Regardless of whether or not the pump gets all the old oil out, it's still a good idea to own one.....particularly if you put very little mileage on the car. I will be getting one to use for my between-service-interval oil changes. I'm due for my 5,000 mile service, but I only have 1,500 miles on the car. I'll probably have changed my oil twice before I get to the 5,000 mile/1 year point.

Thanks for the write-up. This will be the one I get.

17 mins seems kinda long :P

how many quarts does our S4 take on an oil change? 9? i know the maximum capacity, but I am wondering about the actual amount we replace.

    Re: 17 minute oil change

I purchase 10 quarts for every oil change and use a little over 9.

BTW, you guys with new engines, my brother just sent in his oil on his new car and they told him that the oil came from a new car engine. He asked how did they know and they told him that it had a lot of metal in it. I got 1,100 on my car and I am changing the oil monday morning.

Yes, it's marked by liters. When I changed the oil, I was reading 3/4 of the way up on the bottom-orange-piece of the dip-stick and I pulled out 8 and 1/4 liters. It took exactly 9 to fill. I'm not the least bit concerned about what little old oil may be hiding, if any.

I agree with the merits of getting under your car for a look-see (I use the under car method every three changes), but as often as we all seem to change our oil, the convenience of this method thrills me to death.

    Re: 17 minute oil change

Although I still climb under the car when I change the oil, I think these things are great and will probably eventually convert (at least for summer months when it's too hot to crawl around on the driveway). When I drain mine through the drain plug, I use EXACTLY 9.5 quarts to refill. Those that use the pump, how much oil do you need to refill (may help resolve the 'doesn't remove as much oil' discussion). Also, the 9.5 fill seems pretty light compared to the published 11.3 quart capacity - the difference between drain and pump may not be all that significant.
