What it is: Aluminum Expanded Metal Mesh Flattened

I have had alot of questions lately on where i got my mesh from, so i thought i would put this out there for anyone who cares. This is just for information purposes only. I do not want any opinion here. But questions are welcome.

I purchased this in a 4'x4' sheet from McMaster-Carr ( www.mcmaster.com ) the part #9305T44 it cost $71.81+shipping. Its kinda pricey for shipping since it comes frieght but you get enough to do about 3 cars so you can sell some of it. Or you can get it in a smaller sheet then it wouldnt need to be shipped frieght=cheaper. I bought the 4'x4' because i wanted plenty since i was cutting out the license plate area also.

I sprayed 3 coats of primer filler and 2 full cans of undercoating to get the thicker look of the rs4 exspanded mesh.

2nd...the whole hacked up "lemme show you every inch of mah huge FMIC yo!" look just doesn't do it for me. I would put the license plate cover back on and paint the piping and core black. Maybe it's just me, but the whole FMIC look with all the piping isn't very attractive...not exactly something i'd showcase. Just my .02...

is the hd mesh, steel? because the mesh i have is aluminum and very light and very easy to cut?

tis why mine is painted black.. and tis why I have magnets on the back of the filler plate so it can be put back into the place when not running the car hard... Anything else??

i may have bought the wrong one cause the mesh i had was seriously 10 pounds for the whole 4x4 sheet. it was a lot thicker and looked more like the oem rs4 mesh but i never ended up putting it on

and for the previous post, i wasn't worried about "weight gain" lol i was simply referring to the fact that i wouldn't be able to support it behind the grill panels with just some zip ties

the home depot mesh is STEEL, hence it will be heavier and a BITCH to cut and trim. the expanded metal mesh off of mcaster website is ALUMINUM and can be trimmed w/ tin snippers easily. I also bought a sheet of 4x4 off of them and love it. Just use some 3M underbody ruberized black spray paint, spray like 4-5 coatings of that shit, but it will still start to chip out. I also used black zip ties and just drilled a couple tiny holes since I did the rs4 front bumper mod, i didn't have the middle support bar to glue it to.

I use the McMaster aluminum mesh in my modded S4 bumper and it works very well. It was first sprayed in satin black but the winter road salt blasted it back to mostly aluminum. I just sanded and resprayed them with Plastidip spray and it is perfect. Several coats allowed for a bit more build and it feels like rubber.

yeah, its hard to get the paint to stick to aluminum like the steel. Thats why i went for the steel. Secondly i like the protection the steel offers over the plastic, or aluminum alternatives. Its a bit tougher to cut and get into place, but for my wants and needs.. Its what the doctor orderd.

forget all of the rubbish. It doesnt take from the fact that you came on here and battered him for what he is trying to help other do in they're journey's. I could careless what your car does or doesnt look like. Its your car, you pay for it, its your choice. I feel that same way across the board. When i do this, ill prob leave filler plate on. Im debating how to paint the "outside" of the grill inserts. Obviously they are nogaro now, but where do i get them sprayed? how much will that run? i will PS some pics first and test black/nogaro.

Yeah.. Mines cut out, but I have it so i can put the filler plate back in.. hints why i went with steel, so that I can put magnets on the back of the filler plate to have it on for everyday driving.

Just go to your local body shop and ask them to paint the grills, and the bumper (assuming you are doing the middle section). Should be anymore then 200-300 bucks.

My bumper is painted yet because i also did the washer caps, and some more stuff, and im doing alot of one off body work on the rest of the car so its all primed.. im also debating going rs4 wide body, so im still in the decision stage.
