Mobil 1 recommends this for the S4, but the dealer says to use 5W-40.

I've had the same thought for some time now. I live in SoCal so I don't need a very thin oil to deal with cold temperatures. However, I'm still going to stick with M1 0w-40. My thinking is that I love the oil and the polymers in it will recreate a 40w at high tempature, just like a 5w-40 would.

The only difference is that when it's cold, at startup, the M1 is slightly thiner. I don't think that matters and it should provide sufficient lubrication at startup, regardless of outside temperature, and even flow a little better than a 5w would. The mort important part is how it operates when it's hot and M1 does a great job in that regard.

    Maybe I'm wrong. Thoughts?

0-40 will break down quicker than 5-40 due to the different additives. if you live in a really cold climate...like iceland, consider it. otherwise stick with 5-40.

I change oil every 3-5k miles so I don't need to worry about that. M1 is designed to last much longer than that before breaking down.

Good to hear that I'm not the only one using it. I change every 3-5k as well, so the breaking down quicker issue shouldn't be a problem.

Motul or Channa's choices are going to be better than Mobil 1.
