    Rattle likelihood in '01 S4

I have a fairly loud and obnoxious rattle when I engage a higher gear and the engine speed goes below 1000 rpm. It is like a chain hitting metal, and appears to come from the front of the engine. Could be either the serpentine belt tensioner, or the cam belt tensioner. Anybody been there done that? 2.7 TT with 140k miles.

Ur driving in a higher gear at below 1000rpm?

ur putting HUGE stress on the motor.

i wouldnt be suprised if its misfiring or pinging

    or at worst.. knocking

please tell me u arent trying to drive at <1,000rpm in any gear. lol i dont even see how thats possible]

    6th gear at 20mph?

or is it between shifting? is that what youre trying to say?

Cool Re: Rattle likelihood in '01 S4

Wow there are a lot of 'experts' here. So, tell me, smartalecs, what gear are you in when driving in a parking garage? That's when I noticed the noise. And I checked it out myself, replaced the accessory (serpentine) belt tensioner, which was rattling against the stops causing the metallic noise which annoyed me. That fixed the problem...
