    Audi A6 4.2 modability potential...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello All,

I am looking to pick up a Audi A6 4.2L this weekend. I know it comes stock with 296HP but I would like to get it up to around 400.

I have read a lot of conflicting opinions on different forums and elsewhere but someone recommended here for some good info.

What is the difference between the S6 and the A6 that reaps the S6 the extra 40hp?

I am looking to do either intake (which I am told is not restrictive)/chip/tune or a exhaust(which I am told is both restrictive-non restrictive depending on where you look)/chip/tune right away.

Are there any other basic mods I can do... (Headers?) aside from super charging to get me to my goal?

Re: Audi A6 4.2 modability potential...

While I appreciate the link there is a Does anyone have personal experiences with or without hp numbers?

the only engine differences I see from that page are

first off, the engines are similar but different, the S6 has a dual stage intake, whereas the A64.2 has a 3 stage intake, S6 is better in this area. S6 Airbox also has a flap which pulls open at higher rpms to allow increased air flow into the box - however this has not been validated (via VAGCOM)to actually increase airflow through the filter media. There's also different cams, intake/exhaust valving. Software is also different, however, both cars improve with the GIAC chipsets (ECU and TCU, which levels the playing field as far as software tuning goes between the cars.)
So, this re-affirms that I should update the intake

Exhaust - S6 exhaust is 18% freer flowing than the A64.2, which actually has pitifully small exhaust piping. It's not just a matter of doing a catback exhaust as the S6 cats are also freer flowing then the A64.2's. Catback is easily accomplished, but again, I have not researched how much it would cost to swap the S6 downpipes/cats into an A64.2, however, for the money, gain would be minimal from this effort.
So I guess my question is... would doing Intake Headers Exhaust yield 40hp?

40o hp!!!! Good luck withat that... hope you ahve a lot of $$, there is little availbale to mod that engine... You would have to supercharge it...
Maybe consider a cheap 2.7T and take it Stage 3 for 400-450 at teh wheels.

So the S6 has 340hp and the A6 300hp, right?

If the only engine performance differences are intake and exhaust... wouldn't that yield the extra horsepower? How about throwing a chip into the mix?

Re: Audi A6 4.2 modability potential...

i think it says the main difference is in the cams, which i guess are lumpyer in the s6, opening the valves longer, and different software which accounts for most of the hp difference. but as far i read, the cams are $1000/piece and not worth the extra hp. as far as headers go, i have been looking for some for my car and have had no luck finding any... i'm sure it wouldnt be too hard to get some made, just need to watch out for clearance issues... i'm not sure if the b6 s4 headers would work... also, giac has tip and engine chips for $1000 for both which i think provide a good driving experience... i've read a lot of stuff on audiworld, and most people stay away from modding the 4.2... i want to try and incorporate a cintrifugal supercharger into mine, but that would mean having to go with a complete stand-alone software and im not sure if the engine is built to handle the extra 100hp...

Re: Audi A6 4.2 modability potential...

yeah, don't plan on geting that to 400HP, but the new RS4 has the same 4.2 and it has 450hp, but unless you want to buy a RS4 motor and put it in, lol i dont even think the tip tranny can handle 400HP anways, heres some advice, buy a 2.7T, good luck.

BTW if your looking for a chip. look at APR's you get 352 hp and 312lbs just on 93, so right there your close, to 400hp, but you wont get much out of the 4.2 with exhaust. id say 360HP is the max (thats my guess) the 2.7T has more torque anyways.

heres the chip for the 4.2 below the 2.7T chip http://goapr.com/Audi/products/ecu_upgrade_a627t.html

my guess is an honest # with CHip, exhaust and air intake would be closer to 340hp, maybe 350... for your 01

    Email [email protected]
they have a 4.2 there with their own software (ECU and TCU) and other mods...
He'll tell yuo what you cna do for your 01 4.2 and what HP to expect I think.

my best advice is... if you want a fast a6 buy a 2.7... if you want a good looking and a moderately fast one, buy a 4.2

    ^ agreed wiht several above
Stage2+ is > than S6 (all you need is chip $600, piggies $350+labor, exhaust (Custom is cheaper) and then get 710Dvs for $80, Samco TB fdor maybe $70...) and you'll be > than 4.2 or S6
    Mine is stg2 + and I have ran 4.2s and an S6

later get KO4s and you'll gte your 400HP

RS6 is top notch bt too $$$ to buy and own/maintain.
