What is a basic exhaust upgrade....

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
that won't make my 2.7T sound like a ricer or anything but I want a nice tone from the engine if possible I have stock exhaust on my S-line and don't want to void my extended warranty or anything and not looking to spend a lot of $$$'s. I know there are a lot of exhaust options but didn't know if it might include just changing out the mufflers or running all new pipes. I'm pretty new to audi's so any help is appreciated.

Re: What is a basic exhaust upgrade....

I have an S-Line and changed mine also, i got APR cat back exhaust, and its about 2 times louder than stock, cant even really hear it in the car, or you can get milltek, or make your own custom, heres the links.

    APR ($1250) http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/a...aust_a627.html
    Milltek ($1450-1900) http://store.anchormotorsports.com/m...a6allroad.html
    Custom Magnaflow (Cheap) http://youtube.com/watch?v=GMm9CTiLUY4&feature=related

BTW no exhaust will make much loud noise without piggies from vast http://vastperformance.com/shop/prod...products_id=65

or take off the center muffler under the car on your stock exhaust, and add bigger tips from borla, should make it sound a bit louder, thats cheapest way.

    Good Luck!

Re: What is a basic exhaust upgrade....

Ihave the APR also0 and it is VERY quiet!!! too quiet actually, I can't hardly tell the difference and I DO have piggy pipes too. COnsideing taking out the resonator but doubt it'll make a huge diff. The mufflers on APR exhaust are very conservative.
    Custom is MUCH cheaper

i just did a custom exhaust about 3 days ago and it is LOUD! i love it absolutely. its a cat back kinda.. i had them cut off everything after the x pipe, and ran 2.5 inch piping with two magnaflow angle cut round tips. the guys even cut my bumper since i didnt have the cutouts as i am a 2000.. its absolutely amazing and 1/4 the price of a brand name one

Do our cars have an x-pipe. I have looked under there once or twice and I am guessing your talking about that piece between the cats and resonators. I am also considering doing a custom set-up much like yours. I can't wait to hear it!

I love it -- at idle, subtle difference, but when you get on the throttle, it really comes alive, very deep sort of throaty pitch to it, not fart can at all.

at highway crusing speed it's pretty quiet, you know it's there, but no droning.

Around town, RPMs below 2500 and you do get some droning. I drive in sport mode, so it's not an issue for me.

No sound clip yet, will try to get one soon.

Can the bottom panel portion of rear end on 2000 C5 be swapped out for one with cut-outs? (does different year C5 also have the same section, but with cut-outs, or is 2000 only year with what looks like separate section?)

Re: What is a basic exhaust upgrade....

Have the shop cut it out... I would recomend sanding the cut-out to smooth it out and maybe even put some trim around it to make it look nice. Boston Driver put huge 4" tips (I belive) on his and had some silver trim around the valence cut. Silver car so it looked nice.

Re: What is a basic exhaust upgrade....

yeah that sounds incredible. Its a fairly cheap option $120 for mufflers and an extra few for tips and the resonator delete is only a few bucks from a friend. It seems like you can make it sound like that for about $220 or so...

Quick question can you go stage 3 with piggies and a 2.25 cat back like the one discribed above?

I finally got my APR system on the car this past weekend. Sounds awesome, just a little louder than stock, but not noticable. You can feel the difference when you accellerate. The motor seems to rev easier. Might all be in my mind though... lol It could have been a little louder and still have been quite enough...

Someone asked if these cars have an x-pipe... yes right after the cats. The APR system moved the x-pipe into the center muffler.

    Cheers

    Hey Grota

I have my exhaust on the ground in the backyard, I removed this weekend... I can take some measurements for you on mine (I think the 2.7 and the 4.2 has the same exhaust, hopefully someone else could confirm this) and you could use that to find a good replacement on MagnaFlow's site. Let me know if this would help. Definitely easier than doing it under the car...lol

As far as I know they (MagnaFlow) have quite a few mufflers with tips that people are using to replace the rears. If you have a MIG or access to one, you could build your own cat-back for around $400, just an fyi... I was planning on doing that, but I got mine off eBay, if you want to wait and see if they get more in... Turns out to be an APR system. Mint Condition! http://stores.ebay.com/BB-Exhaust-Ou...QQftidZ2QQtZkm This was about $200 more than the parts so it was a no brainer IMHO. Spending $1200 on an exhaust is just ridiculous though...

Plenty links to parts places in my Sig.

    Cheers

Can the bottom panel portion of rear end on 2000 C5 be swapped out for one with cut-outs? (does different year C5 also have the same panel section, but with cut-outs, or is 2000 only year with what looks like separate panel section requiring turn down at end of pipes?)

    TIG, not MIG
Absolutely, but not many DIY-ers have access to a MIG let alone a TIG.

I used my MIG for my GLX's exhaust and it turned out good enough for me. It won't win any awards, but it won't fall apart either..

I don't have gas on my MIG yet, so I used regular flux-core wire and painted all the piping and welds before I installed it. So far it's lasted just fine through two New England winters.

I wish the TIGs would get cheaper though. Their welds are just SO much neater.

    Cheers

Grota - he was referring to prior post in thread re panel/valence on the 2000 C5 which is not exhaust-mod friendly

I don't think so, The ones with the cut outs are longer than the ones without.

    I'll post this again...

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278323

With the pre-facelift C5's you can either cut the valence and get the tips through there or you can have the shop turn the exhaust so it faces down like stock (after the muffler).

Go with a 2.5" piping all the way back so make sure your muffler is 2.5 ID / OD
