    FSI Pump Removal

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I only have about 9,000 miles left on my factory warranty and when I bought my '06 A4 with APR software I got the dreaded limp mode. After two weeks with the dealer they told me it was two coil packs and my car was good to go. I'm starting to feel hesitation (in stock mode) between 3 and 4k RPMS.

I decided last night to remove my factory high pressure fuel pump and ran into a snag. I see all over this forum there is recommendations DIY's on how to install a new pump but nothing on removal.

Please see the below pic. I was able to relieve pressure from the shrader valve, removed that valve/fitting with a 13mm socket. Then used a T-30 torx to remove the three main bolts but here is where I had trouble. There are two fuel rails that come in the bottom of the pump. With a lot of painstaking work I got off the one labled (1) Fuel Line below but I cant for the life of me figure out how to get (2) Fuel Line off and I cant even get a tool in there.

Please help, I want to inspect the pump before my warranty runs out but I dont want to break my car. Thanks!

I've tried myspace and flickr above, why cant I post a pic?
I posted the picture in my gallery.

    Re: FSI Pump Removal

I don't care who's fuel pump you buy but you need to read our document about inspecting your camshaft/follower while the pump is out. This is critical for running any aftermarket pump and is even critical for the stock pump. Your problem may have nothing to do with the software. You may find the source of your issues using this document as there is a section about a Technical Service Bulletin from Audi.

This is sooooo true. Right after APR software upgrade I had a major fuel cut problem. Not long after CEL came on. Got the code and looked it up online and found a TSB about the camlobe issue. Took it to my dealer and it was all taken care of under warranty. No fuel cut since then. But I still want to put in the pump from APR.

    Re: FSI Pump Removal

Update on the issue... pulled off the fuel pump on Saturday. That was "interesting". The one fuel line (6 mm tripple square) was a royal pain in the butt and took me a long time to get at without breaking anything.

So my cam is all scraped up, the tip of the cam follower looks exactly like example "B" on the TSB and the tip of the plunger looks worn.

I'd post pics but still can't figure that out (help).

Calling Audi today and will give you all an update.

    Re: FSI Pump Removal

Added the pics to my profile... have to drop the car off at lunch. Made the appointment with the dealer through Audi USA. Due to this being the third time I have to be back at the dealer for the same issue I asked Audi to extend my warranty to that of a CPO car and they said we apprieciate your concern but no.

Not sure how long I will have my '06 A4.

    Re: FSI Pump Removal

Does anyone know if this problem of premature cam lobe wear, etc. still exists on 08s? The TSB posted only covers 05-07s, but this could just be a date issue.
    Thanks,

    Re: FSI Pump Removal

Went to the dealer at lunch and my A4 is going to be gone a while. It's ok I have to be out of town for work all week so this will work out ok.

The dealer was a bit taken a back that I took the pump off and inspected it when the car wasn't throwing a code. I explained how it seems to be a very common problem and that they were not willing to inspect it under warranty when it was in the shop twice last year for this reason so I took it off and took pictures. I came to the dealer with the pictures I took and the TSB, he was actually reading it the whole time and it seems like that helped.

    I'll keep you all posted.

thx...keep us posted as I just bought an 08 A4 and to my understanding the dealer fixed this as per the TSB before I even bought the car.

    Re: FSI Pump Removal

Parts took a day for the dealer to get in but I got a call this morning from the dealer that the parts are in and they are starting the work.

They also told me this could take a while so they have a curt car for me.

My '06 didnt have many details on it's service records so I asked the dealer to update all service (included up to 45k miles on the '06) so the dealer has a ton of other work to do while they are changing the cam and cam lobe follower.

Big question, once all this is taken care of will the new cam be ok with an upgraded fuel pump (APR or what ever)? I'd like to run my APR 93 octane program eventually but dont want to run it if I'm just going to wear out the new cam in a couple years. I know the new one is a "hardened" cam but how do the new ones hold up?? Any data on this??

    Re: FSI Pump Removal

Well I got my A4 back on Friday 5/16/08 from the dealer and got it re-chipped at the VW dealer I bought her from on Monday 5/19/08 at lunch.

I've been running the 93 octane program since Monday and man I remember why I bought this car again! The A4 is a nice, fun to drive car, get it chipped and it really wakes this car up!! No lag, no fuel cuts so far, just smooth crisp acceleration!
