bad coilpack. change it. clearing it is not going to do you any good

ok, but this happened twice now and both times were when the car idled for over 15 min. The first time it happ I turned off the car, no cel but second time I was outside the car so when I came back to it, it was missing.. Turned off the car and still the same, cleared the code 2 times and the SECOND i pushed clear, it ran smooth.

I drove it this morning to school, 45 mile drive and no probs. With the symptoms described could it still be a coil? Only malfunctions when it idles? Weird that I can reset it with a comp and it starts running fine again for as many miles as you want, just cant let it idle..

Flood was really low.. but when ibought the car it had to go to this german specialist and the genius changed my cam adjustor without removing the motor.. he charged me 800 bucks <-- that problem has nothing to do with the flood, and neither does the damn coil.

Yeah, I know. Problems like my range control module going out, because its underneath the glove box, and my seat modules going out.. are expected.. not motor problems becaus no water was sucked into the enginer, nor did it get as high as coil packs..

it was less than half price =)i got a 2006 for 20k.. with 17 on the dash. AND i have a b6 parts car, hence got my seat motors working.. the car is perfect now. AND it has every single option offered by audi.. rns-e, 6mt, rear htd seats, blah blah blah. and to top it all off, my dad is a car dealer, so i got help finding the beast.

Dude TRUST me.. i saw the actual part.. he removed pieces from the adjustor that was bad, and put pieces from the new one..i saw him do everything.. he actually MADE a tool also to line up the cams also because the tool audi supplies is too thick and requires the motor to be out..

Misfire sounds like coilpack to me too. When replacing make sure you get the new updated Coilpacks. I have several go bad but been 28k since AOA replaced all 8 with updates and no problems. You Mechanic has to be a miricle worker to chage the cam adjuster with engine in the car.

The reason this might only be happening after long idles is that the coil pack might be over heating causing it not to work as well. Coils contain oil that are supposed to keep them cool but an air bubble or a leak could easily cause it to misfire when it heats up.

I got my answer then.. there was a slight bit of oil on the valve cover gasket and i was wondering wehre it came from.. makes so much sense

Please post pics, provide better descriptions, part #'s or something.
Since you saw the part can you describe it from the pics below?

There are 4 chains total.
The Cam Chain adjusters are way up on the top end,rear side of the motor which cannot be reached even with the tranny out?
What parts were replaced? Part #?
If true, your mechanic is amazing and the only one who has done this, could you post the shops name and location so others can save ton's of money?
That would be great and give us all some peace of mind as this can be a 5-10k job out of warranty?

Below pic is the automatic cam timing adjuster, oil pressure fed...way up on top rear...1 per side and is replaced as a unit.

Item # 7 below is the oil driven solenoid operated automatic chain adjuster...1 per side
Item # 9 is a screen like filter for the adjuster, so keep your oil clean :)
Items # 3 & 4 are connected to the cam shaft ends, vary your cam timing based on rpm and engine temp.

Below pic is the accessory drive chain which runs the oil and water pumps.
Shafts run all the way thru the engine as the oil pump is in the pan and the water pump is way up front.

Coilpacs do not have any oil in them, they are totally solid state devices.
Known to fail, but NO oil.

I promise you THAT was the part he used.. like i actually held that part in my hand and clicked it.. it clicks in once and then its unlickable till you pull it out.. and its spring loaded. i SWEAR MAN.. like i dont even know how to explain to you. He told me he used parts from it.....did NOT replace the whole thing.. He even showed me the cams misaligned and everything.. and there IS room to work back there, just not enough, at all.

AND the car ran like complete and utter shit.. and i had codes for 'cam shaft position sensor' The car missed at idle, but was decent when driving, but like no power at all.. it was different from the CYL 1 misfire, bc that cyl wasnt firing at all...im SURE the camshaft issue is fixed.

He told us the motor needed to be removed, but he thought he could get to it without removing the motor... and he did

:( 850miles and 14 hours from Boston...hope I never need him.

Your issue does sound like it's the coilpac..either swap 2 around and see if the problem moves or just replace pac#1..passenger side(USA) front is # 1..fyi...the new ones are all black and part # is 077 905 115 S

Okay here is the deal on that. Since the car was sititng around for 4 months prior to when i got it, the battery was completely dead when i picked it up. And when a battery is completely dead throughout winter, its done for.. therefore when i left Werners, he told me to replcace the battery as soon as I got home.. and I didnt because new batteries are $100 and this one still started the car the next morning..

So I decide to work on the car thursday morning or whatever, and in the 10 mins I had the door open, the car lost so much power that the car needed jumped to start. I jumped it and let it idle, and idle, and idle, thinking that the battery would charge back up.. but it started missing after a while because when a car idles with a weak battery like that, the voltage drops below 12v when idleing thus causing a coilpack to malfunction/limp mode whatever you wanna call it. <------ this is all Werners theory when i called him about it.

Long story short, i replaced the battery with a nice one from autozone, and now the car starts MUCH quicker, can keep doors open for hours without worrying, and car does not miss at idle. Problem solved.

And btw I have family in boston so if your car is drivable when adjustor fails, just tellthem to hop in and come see me. lol jk

How many miles on your car? mine had 17k at fail
