    Quick coilpack question...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there any physical way to tell if a coil pack is bad? I pulled a code today for a misfire in cyl 4, and I'm guessing it's the coil pack, but I'd like to be able to tell before I buy a new set. I've had the car for well over 20k and haven't changed them once since I bought it. I guess I could swap it out for one of my other cyls and see if it reads a misfire in the new cyl, but is there any way to tell that requires less work?

Btw, don't throw shit at me for asking this, but which is cyl 4? The one near the rad or the one near the firewall?

On a side note, it my fuel pump was on it's way out (which I believe it is) it would cause a misfire in more than one cylinder, correct?

    Re: Quick coilpack question...

Fuel pumps dont start going out, they are either working or dead.

#4 cylinder is the one near the firewall.

If you want to find out if it is the coil pack, just swap it with the coil at cylinder #1. If the misfire jumps to #1 its the coil pack, if it doesn't then it could be a bad spark plug or even bad compression.

    Re: Quick coilpack question...

it is most likely the plug if you havent changed them in 20k.... and swap the coilpacks around and then re-read the code and see i it changed.. it could be a bad icm..

off topic---has anyone ever tried to repair a blown icm..

    Re: Quick coilpack question...

So I gave VW a call out of curiosity. $41 for the same exact part number. Go figure. Slapped it in and shes running fine, taking the comp out to clear the CEL. Thanks again dudes.

    Re: Quick coilpack question...

I had the same CEL problem, coilpacks were new and the plugs were new also. It turns up that the injectors were somewhat clogged and needed some fuel cleaner($13.99 Chevron treatment).

    Re: Quick coilpack question...

Your car should have a recall on coil packs. Call an Audi dealer, and ask them if your VIN has a recall. They should replace all of your ignition coils for free. All 2001s have it.

    Re: Quick coilpack question...

Go to an Audi dealer to check for a recall on your car. You can't return the coil as anything electric cannot be returned to the dealer.

    Re: Quick coilpack question...

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I can't find anything about that recall. I just called Audi and NHTSA...

I would love for it to be true as both you and the guy sitting next to me are swearing there was a coil pack recall but Audi and the Government are swearing otherwise. o.O
