AoA ECT Recall -- Stealership conspiracy?

--LONG STORY, semi-rant; bear with me...

Okay, so earlier today, I pulled into the Audi Stealership in Winston-Salem, NC complaining of an erratic temp. gauge (takes forever to reach optimal; fluctuates between cold and optimal when driving). Mind you, I had my ECT Sensor replaced under the recall last week. However, I noticed that ever since they replaced my faulty sensor, my gauge had been fluctuating (the CEL associated with the original faulty gauge was gone though)

So, after checking/scanning the B6, the service rep. at the desk tells me that there is another faulty temp. coolant sensor under my radiator that has malfunctioned and told me it would cost $30 for the part and $150 to replace w/ labor [fuck that] claiming that the ECT recall only covered one sensor and not this one (part number 061919501A) My question to you AZ folk is, WTF is going on? I can understand they don't want to foot the bill for the repair but couldn't they have at least checked on the other temp sensor the last time? Especially when it seems like the cooling systems on our cars are inherently dependent on critical readings from both sensor nodes.

Buy this sensor and replace it yourself and save the labor. It located in the radiator outlet pipe. Its grey in color and has two pins. It can be easily accessed from below once the belly pan is removed. You will have to place a bucket underneath, to catch the coolant for a possible reuse. Make sure you do it when the engine is stone cold, so you do not burn yourself. The work is very easy, it will just take perhaps 30 to 60 mins, being first time. The part number is 06a 919 501a (list price $22.58). Good Luck

the two sensors are not the same, I ordered the one that goes behind the engine and tried to use it on the lower radiator hose and it was not the same.

I wouldnt check a sensor Im not getting paid to check, especially if when I had it in I had no reason to believe I needed to. If it works right when I check it then I wouldnt mess with anything else. And I at the GSO store, not WS.

I'm with Laconvail on this, it is not the dealer's fault.... just dumb luck that it failed shortly after the cts was replaced...... if the lower thermoswitch is the cause of your concern.

Re: AoA ECT Recall -- Stealership conspiracy?

Well it's kinda like going to the doctor with an Elbow pain and wondering why they didn't X-Ray your knee. It's because X-rays (time/labor) costs money and Insurance (AoA recall) isn't paying for that.

Anyways, it's pretty easy to change. Make sure you have some audi antifreeze cause you will lose some no matter how fast you are at changing the sensor while lying on your back with antifreeze running down your arm. =]
