    Quick Valve Cover Gasket Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Maybe a noob question but is there any way I can tell whether or not I have to replace the cam adjuster seals in addition to the valve cover gaskets? I wanted to knock out the valve covers in the driveway tomorrow afternoon but if I have to do cam adj seals I'll have to wait for another day. I think the valve cover gasket leak is causing me to misfire which is giving me only 14psi of boost.

The car has 87k and I plan on doing TB later this year so maybe I could look into the cam adj seals then(?). Thanks!

Check the camshaft adjusters and see if there's an oily residue on them. If so, you should replace them.

you'll need a "special" tool for the cam tensioner seals if you don't have it already.

correct^^ Also, if its been leaking a while you will see residue on the outside of the adjuster, leaking down the front (driver), and back(passenger) sides of the heads

Re: Quick Valve Cover Gasket Question

So I guess I should just do it as preventitive maintenance if nothing else since I'll already be in there. Thanks a lot for your help.

the tool only comes on a new adjuster but you can buy them online for 30 bux. the book says you have to pull the cam out, but just put the tool in and use a pick to get the half moon out and the metal gasket. clean and dry well dont use rtv of any kind just on the corners of the vc gasket. and dont make it too tight. its a great flate rate job. 4 hours per side :)
