    Forget 2.8 -- look for a 2.7t

at that mileage, I would make sure that the timing belt and water pump have been replaced - i think audi recommends that around 100k for the 2.8.

out of curiosity, why is a 2.7T out of the question?

also, i am not sure if the 2.8 V6 in the A6 is the same as the 2.8 that was found in the a4, GTI, jetta (vr6), but if so you could check with people that have those cars for other common errors with the engine.

    Re: ??buying an audi??

2.8 don't seem to have many problems, just as long as timing belt is done it should be fine... check that all the electrics work and you should be good to go

If you can find an Audi independent shop that can perform a pre-purchase inspection - you should have one done. The PPI should be able to spot "trouble areas".

A deal is a deal, I guess... Near Chicago? Check CraigsList? Comfy ride, but I'd only deal with maintenance of Audi if I had performance of 2.7+.

    Re: ??buying an audi??

Camshaft seals, serpentine belt tensioner, valve cover gasket, tie-rods are all items that should be checked. The seals and gasket are the common sources of oil leaks. Like said above, the timing belt and water pump should have already been replaced, and a lot of the little stuff should of been taken care of at the same time. The tie-rod design was updated at some point, and it is always good to see the newer version on the car.

The 2.8 may be slower then the 2.7T, but it is not terrible. I have the heavier Avant and it is no rocket off the line, but I have no trouble with the passing power. Since most of my driving is on lightly traveled roads, I wanted the reliability of the 2.8 over the 2.7T. On my daily commute of 37 miles each way, I might see 5 to 10 other cars until I get close to my work. And of the cars I do catch up to, I have no problem passing them, even at 9 to 10,000 ft above sealevel.

When the turbos go on the 2.7, and they will go, you are looking at big $ to replace both of them. And since you have to drop both the engine and the tranny to replace one, you might as well replace both.
