Hiding Key on outside of car? Would you?

Hey all,

Scenario:
It was inevitable but it finally happened. I forgot my keys at work. I carpool with some other guys and we drive about 80 miles to our client. It was only after arriving at the lot at the end of the day that I noticed my keys weren't with me. The only solution at that point was to drive back to work.

Question:
I didn't bother calling CAA (or AAA in the US) as I knew they wouldn't be able to unlock the door without ruining the trim, window, or whatever. I guess a locksmith might work. Simple answer would be not to forget the keys but I'm beyond that.

Have any of you considered hiding the valet key for instance on the outside of the car? Either secure to the undercarriage with wiring, duck tape, or something else underneath?

What about that little plastic key that AOA give you that fits in your wallet in case you loose your key. I have had mine in my wallet for the past six months.

i considered doing it but i just thought again of how much of as @$$ i would feel if my car was stolen because someone found the key. Rural & suburban area is fine but if you live in the city, i don't suggest it.

They make magnetic key things. I have had one under my car before just hide it somewhere that nobody knows where it is but you. Don't tell ANYBODY and I would do it... I carried the black valet key in my wallet till my wallet got warped and the key ended up cracking in two..... weird.

well i keep the valet key in the car hidden in a secret place lol... incase i ever loose the key or ne thing.. and idk if it comes with all the audis but i got this little "wallet/emergency key" with my 08... so i just keep that in the wallet which only opens the door.. so if i ever loose my keys just open it with the wallet key and get to the hidden valet and go home lol :)...works perfect for me.. because i ALWAYS have my wallet..

why not just get the extra keys from your house and then go back to your car?

Then just give up.

If you manage to leave your keys at work AND loose your wallet at the same time.. then just give up, break into your own place, call it a day and go to sleep. Otherwise the only thing that's going to happen next is you're going to go reach for your cell phone, only to find out it's been eaten by a pack of wolves.

Well with that mentality, you shouldn't keep you keys in your house either. Cuz someone could break into your house, steal your keys and then steal your car.

Maybe we should just put the spare key on a string and hang it around our necks. But then if someone was to cut you head off you key would fall off and then your car could be stolen.

Roadside Assistance is till 100K ... right? They don't use a slim-jim. They probably cut you a new key right there. They can do that using the VIN. It happened on one of my old cars. The guy came out and had to call in the VIN, they provided him with codes that allowed him to cut a key to my car. Then I had another spare.

The valet key doesn't fit in my wallet (very small wallet, big enough for credit cards only). If I had a credit card/emergency key that came with the 08 so that I can at least open the doors that would solve my problem. I don't think they came with the 07.

I saw the little magnet things but I don't think that will last two minutes driving over a speed bump or pothole.

As for being worried about someone finding the key on the undercarriage and taking the car I don't think that's a huge concern as most criminals would probably just smash the window to get in.

I havent lost my key yet but was thinkin bout carryin that little black one in the wallet.

My question is, once you unlock the door wouldnt the alarm go off?? At least it happened to me on the B6 years ago...

I called Audi Roadside Assistance when I locked myself out and they sent a 3rd party towing company to come and jimmy my car open...

those magnet key holders saved my ass big time years and years ago (like 19 years ago). Did it for about 5 years and then never really did it again. If you can find an area that doesn't ordinarily get wet, and is lodged strategically where gravity won't make the magnet work too hard, go for it.

I keep a spare in my wife's car and vice versa. When spares were cheap back in the day I would also have a spare at work and with my parents.

heres a simple solution.. just dont lose your keys! lol keep them clipped to your belt 24/7 as i do, never had a problem ever with any of that...
