    Exclamation Transmission/diff question...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I hope I did not make a big mistake... The other night my driver CV Axle popped out of the tranny (human error while putting it in, no loctite and obviously not enough torque) due to the bolts not fully torqued... now the question. I moved the car about ten more feet after it came to a stop and then the car did not want to move anymore. You can hear the clutch engage and hear gears turning in the tranny but no power was put to the 3 good wheels... I really hope I did not make a stupid mistake and screw up my tranny... I already rebuilt the damn thing once. Somebody tell me good news :)

    Re: Transmission/diff question...

You're fine. The diff is designed so that if there is absolutely no traction on one of the wheels, the power will go to that wheel. Just re-connect the axle and drive away.

Well thats good to hear except I need a new axle... it tore the inner cv casing up pretty good when it was bouncing around under there... not to mention my heat shield. But it is good to know that a new axle and I am back on the road. OH, this is the same one that I replaced the CV boot on!! Guess the car gods felt I needed practice on cv boot repair!! I am going to order a new axle soon and will let you know how it all works out... this gives me the time to replace my speed sensor and put my Eibach's and koni's on

Yeah I JUST did my outer CV boots when I put the tranny back in the car. Well, last night after racing the R8, I decided to do a little top speed run, and hit 186 mph. I ripped both outer boots. DAMN. I need to find some stronger than stock boots

Holy $&*@ !! You got going that fast!?!? Nice... So I see your tranny rebuild went well... Thats good. I really hope I have no further problems in the next few months, looking to drive this car half way across America. Going to a school in Atlanta for the military then going to go to the Capitol to visit my Dad and step mom. They both work at the pentagon. How cool is that!? I am going to get my own tour of the pentagon and meet important people :D Wish my step mom had connections to the White House... Who knows, she might .... Meet ol George W. !! haha...

holy piss....186!!! I don't have that big of cahones.....i'm always worried about a tire blowout at high speeds....186 + tire blow out = nothing left of car but dust. I'm not trying to knock you for it....I think it's awesome!

Just hope the car is up to the trip... If!!!!! If, I get to the White House, will do so... "Hey G Dub, Jerbel, one of our neighbors to the north... you know, Canada, he is a superb guy!! He once drove his B5 S4 on public roads in excess of 180 mph (not giving you shit )and never blew a tire, he did lose his outer CV boots, but he is a good guy!! Even rebuilt the tranny himself. Not bad huh.... Sir?"

GW- " Rebuilt the tranny!?!?!?! I thought they wanted to be that way?"

    HAHAHAHA!!!

Just wish me luck on this. If it runs for the next few weeks I just may take the car to Atlanta.

If the thing breaks that will be one hell of a tow bill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Transmission/diff question...

Make sure to do a good mechanical inspection before you leave. Check the CV boots, I would replace all the coolant hoses you can access easily, top up the oil, etc.

    Good luck!

ehhh haha, yup, maybe I shouldn't have admitted that on a public forum. I'll probably catch some flak for that one from people who aren't as relaxed as you two fellas.

PS. PM sent regarding the EFK.

    Re: Transmission/diff question...

Yup it's possible. The speedo was buried almost to the digital odometer. I still have stock gearing and was redlining 6th gear.
