    Question crankshaft

What purpose does the large "gear looking" thing at the back of the crankshaft serve? The part I speak of is inside the block between the 4th cylinder and the back of the block. Any one know?

I'll try it, but when I visually inspected them there was a noticable difference between the two. Im just not sure if I want the stock wheel or the correct wheel for the crank that in there right now

all the trigger wheel does is provides a means for the crank sensor to get signal... the rings are the same on both your stock and the aba crank, same size, shape, and same number of holes

    Re: crankshaft

I'll take your word on it, but I did see a difference as far as the teeth on the wheel. I guess if worst comes to worst down the road I drop my subframe, pull off my oil pan and pop out my crank...hopefully it doesnt come to that

er, what do you mean by that?

you'll want to get it checked and checked for straightness and polished (maybe magnafluxed too?) but that's all you need to do...

Yea thats what I meant. My machinist, recommended that I have the journals "turned" so the bearing surfaces are clean and the right size for the bearings. I never heard anyone meantion it thats why i asked.

The only reason you should ever need the journals turned or machined is if there's a taper or out of round journal.

The other possibility is that a journal may be worn, or had a spun bearing previously. If it's salvageable, you can turn the journal down and use an "OS"(oversized) bearing. Bearings made for a non-OEM spec bore/diameter are labeled as "OS0.005", "US0.005", or similar. The number is how many thousandths the bearing is larger or smaller than OEM spec.
This can be beneficial in the racing world, but I'm not sure where you would find bearings like that for a VW/Audi.
